Message from EVC Simmons

Dear Colleagues,

As we settle into the spring quarter, our UC San Diego community has some notable arts-related happenings to celebrate along with the warming weather.

Our campus is the home to two 2023 Guggenheim Fellows, Professors Patrick Anderson and Jac Jemc. The professors’ work honored through their selection for fellowships highlights the strength of our faculty’s research in all disciplines, including the arts and humanities

The Stuart Collection, recently highlighted in national publications for being accessible and enjoyable for locals and out-of-town visitors alike, will celebrate an exciting new addition with the completion of KAHNOP • TO TELL A STORY. This impactful new work by artist Ann Hamilton, is mere steps from the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley Station. Highlighting themes of social justice, revolution, and environmental activism, it is augmented by the words of poets from UC San Diego’s Archive for New Poetry. Information about the opening celebration is included below.

In addition to celebrating the completion of KAHNOP • TO TELL A STORY, the Epstein Family Amphitheater just next to the newest Stuart Collection piece has a comprehensive spring slate of events that include movies under the stars, a performance by King Britt and Friends as part of the La Jolla Playhouse’s WOW Festival, and a performance by Grammy Award-winning Ozomatli just after Cinco de Mayo.

Hoping to see you at one of the many campus performances and events in the coming weeks!

Best regards,

Elizabeth H. Simmons

Trauma-Informed Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Training Available

Trauma-Informed Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (TI-DEIB) training at UC San Diego aims to develop an institutional framework and approach that recognizes:

  • the prevalence of traumatic experiences or exposures; and
  • the impacts of structural and systemic oppression on various groups.

TI-DEIB then works to mitigate these impacts via the implementation of policies and practices that reflect social justice and healing. TI-DEIB training focuses on a supportive and safer environment for students, staff, and faculty, acknowledging that in today's world, we all have experienced some type of trauma. The TI-DEIB training will be held Friday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to Noon. Registration for the upcoming training can be done online. Those with questions are welcome to email Dwayne Mosbey at damosbey@ucsd.edu

Triton Testing Center (TTC) Reminders

The TTC exists to provide secure and integrous paper-based testing services to any student who needs to take their tests outside the time and space constraints of the classroom. The center is able to assist with accommodated testing, make-up testing, and in other situations where a student needs to test outside of the classroom but within a proctored setting. Instructors can visit the TTC website for step-by-step instructions on how to get started working with the center. The TTC also maintains the Proctor Pool, which is designed to supplement a professor's instructional team in proctoring in-class tests. It is recommended that instructors submit Proctor Pool requests as soon as you are aware of the need using this form: https://forms.office.com/r/p11KwVWqEm

Individuals who run into any issues, would like someone to walk them through RegisterBlast (the TTC scheduling software) step-by-step, or would like a physical tour of the Triton Testing Center, should:

SPUR Workshops Now Available

The Design Lab is working to bring together students, faculty, staff and teams from across our campus to generate new ideas to expand paid undergraduate research opportunities, particularly for students who have yet to see themselves as researchers or who, by way of financial stressors, have to choose between a paid work experience and a non-paid research opportunity.

Between now and May 24, the Design Lab will be facilitating a number of workshops for those interested in creating solutions to closing this particular equity gap. On May 25, a celebration will be held to showcase potential innovations to scaling paid undergraduate research (SPUR) at UC San Diego. Those with teams interested in participating are invited to schedule a 2.5 to 3-hour Design Lab workshop for team members at the Design Lab. To schedule a workshop, please email vcsa@ucsd.edu.

Update Your Work Location With a New Management Tool

In July 2021, the campus initiated the Work Location Status Tool to provide information partially in response to changes brought on by the pandemic, but also due to the importance of building and maintaining an accurate database of when and where employees conduct their on-site work. In an effort to continue this work and align the information with the campus’ Space Management records, an updated tool has been developed. The Enterprise Employee Work Location and Space Management Tool, is live and facilitates collection of work location and space information. All Academics and Staff are required to log into the Enterprise Employee Work Location and Space Management Tool to review and confirm or update their data by April 21, 2023, even if their work location status has not changed.
