Provost's Seminar Series concludes a successful season with April 10 final seminar

Clip from the “The Future of Space Exploration” on the March 27, 2025 seminar.

(15 seconds video.) Former MIT/Draper Laboratory Principal Engineer Edward Grace, MSEE, who served on the Apollo 13 Mission Operations Team, shares his expertise on “The Future of Space Exploration” in the March 27 seminar.

The 2024-2025 Provost's Seminar Series delivered an excellent season of intellectual engagement at FGCU. From examining the 2024 Presidential Election and the Origins of Rock and Roll, delving into the strategies of negotiations and international relations, exploring the future of space exploration, the FGCU community has enjoyed access to thought leaders in diverse fields.

In partnership with the Naples Discussion Group (NDG), this academic year’s series has featured talks led by distinguished scholars from top universities within the State University System and prestigious institutions including Harvard University and MIT.

(Top left) Dr. Michael McDonald, UF Professor of Political Science, analyzes “The 2024 Presidential Election” during our first Provost's Seminar Series event of the academic year. (Top right) Dr. Clay Motley, Dean of FGCU's College of Arts & Sciences, explores “The Origins of Rock and Roll” during the January Provost’s Seminar Series.

(Above) Robert H. Mnookin, Emeritus Chair of Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation, shares insights on “Bargaining with the Devil: When to Negotiate, When to Fight.”

(Above) Dr. Alex Barder, FIU Professor of Politics and International Relations, presents “Race and Fascism in International Relations” to an engaged FGCU audience.

(Left) Dr. Andrew Ballard, FSU Assistant Professor of Political Science, discusses “Minority Rights: Is the Minority or the Majority Currently Winning?” at the February Provost’s Seminar. (Right) Dr. Andrew Rosenberg, UF Assistant Professor of International Relations, explores “The Global South in the 21st Century: Politics, Perils, & Promises.”

“FGCU couldn't arrange so many high-quality speakers on our own,” said Dr. Clay Motley, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, who has been connected to the seminar series since his time leading FGCU's Honors College. “This partnership helps connect FGCU faculty to an important part of our regional community.”

FGCU students actively participate in Q&A sessions, gaining valuable insights and perspectives from world-class scholars throughout the 2024-2025 Provost's Seminar Series.

The partnership between FGCU and the Naples Discussion Group has successfully connected our campus with regional community members, creating a shared space for intellectual growth and engagement.

The Provost's Seminar Series continues to draw engaged audiences from across FGCU and the broader Southwest Florida community, fostering intellectual dialogue and meaningful exchanges between experts and attendees.

Students, faculty, and staff have engaged in lively discussions, gained new perspectives, and interacted directly with experts in specialized subject areas. These seminars have successfully advanced and stimulated intellectual development across campus while also strengthening FGCU's community connections.

The series supports FGCU’s strategic plan by “Innovating for Academic Excellence” (Goal 1) and “Elevating Partnerships for Regional Impact” (Goal 3).

Join us for the final event in the series:

The Lucas Center is seeking Faculty Partners for the Fall 2025 Student-Faculty Partnership Program (SFPP)

Applications are open through Sunday, April 13!

The Student Faculty Partnership Program (SFPP) at FGCU places one student and one faculty member in dialogue with each other for an entire semester.

Students work up to 6.5 hours per week in the paid role of teaching consultant to a faculty member, earning approximately $1,560 per semester.

Through this program, student consultants analyze, affirm, and support the revision of classroom practice in the context of one of the faculty partner's courses with the goal of maximizing engagement and learning for all involved.

Student and faculty partners take a range of approaches to their collaboration, starting with a focus on classroom practice and often expanding to consider curriculum, assessment, inclusion, and other dimensions of teaching. Overall, student and faculty partners work to develop a dialogue in the interest of improving the course.

If you are interested in learning more about the SFPP you can read about the program and watch a video in the FGCU 360 feature here or visit the SFPP section of the Lucas Center website here.

Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (ORSP) Announcements

FGCU continues to use our negotiated Federal Rate Agreement

Implementing Effort Certification in Workday

With the assistance of Information Technology Services (ITS), ORSP will be initiating Effort Certification in Workday. Effort Certification is a requirement of Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200.430 which contains the federal regulatory requirements for internal controls over certifying time expended on externally funded sponsored projects. The University's practice is to utilize after-the-fact effort reporting to certify that salaries charged, or cost shared to sponsored awards, are reasonable and consistent with the work performed.

It requires that each employee whose salary (or portion of salary) is charged to an externally sponsored project certify that the amount that the Government is billed for his/her work is reasonable in relation to the work that the employee performed. All individuals involved with the administration and conduct of externally sponsored award activities, including central and departmental sponsored project administrators, principal investigators, and other research personnel must comply.

The labor provided by an employee often is called his/her "effort." The method by which an employee certifies his/her effort depends on whether the employee is "non-exempt" (also called "hourly" i.e., that he/she is paid by the hour and fills in bi-weekly time sheets), "exempt," (also called "monthly," i.e., that his/her salary is stated by the month, semester, or year, he/she does not fill in bi-weekly time sheets), faculty, (9-month, 12-month, or out-of-unit) or student (including OPS salary who also fills in bi-weekly time sheets with the hours worked on each project they are assigned.)

Effort Certification will be initiated by ORSP in Workday within 60 days after the end of each semester, fall, spring, and summer. The effort certification will be routed for approval and review at the college level grant/budget manager, then to the employee, then to ORSP. Student/OPS effort will be certified by the principal investigator for the project, not the student/OPS worker. Once you log into Workday, the effort will show under notifications. There you will review the effort and decide whether it is the amount committed and hit approved. If the amount is not what you expect to see, you must hit "send back" with a comment on what the issue is, so the effort can be checked and adjusted, if necessary.

We ask that you not hit the "Change Effort" button. The changing of effort requires ORSP to review the budgeted amount and compare with the effort shown in Workday. Once confirmed, the department will enter any salary adjustments, if needed.

The following is an expected schedule for the Effort Certification to be initiated in Workday:

  •  Fall – ORSP will send notifications to grant/budget managers review in mid Jan – Feb will run Fall effort - Should have all effort certified by March/April.

  • Spring – ORSP will send notifications to grant/budget managers review in late May will run Spring effort in June - Should have all effort certified by July/Aug.

  • Summer –ORSP will send notifications to grant/budget managers in September and will run Summer in Oct. Should have all effort certified by Nov/ Dec.

ORSP will be announcing training sessions for grant/budget managers, principal investigators and employees that include handouts with instructions regarding effort certification prior to the release.

One can also sign up for a training on the Workday Open-Lab Sessions when they are announced. It is scheduled for April 4, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. In the meantime, please reach out to ORSP with questions.
