ACE Women's Network hosts golf learning experience with PGA Golf Management Program | | Dr. Tara McKenna, Director of FGCU's PGA Golf Management program, demonstrates the proper posture, grip, and swing of a golf club. | |
On March 10, FGCU faculty and staff members gathered in Sugden Resort and Hospitality Management (Sugden Hall) for the “Lunch and Learn Golf” event sponsored by the FGCU ACE Women’s Network. The FGCU ACE Women's Network facilitates the networking of women interested in pursuing leadership opportunities in higher education.
Through a structured approach that includes connection opportunities and sharing of best practices, the network supports women across all university roles. All faculty and staff are welcome to join this network to receive information about upcoming events.
Women from all skill levels enjoyed this networking opportunity with their fellow Eagles to learn about the history of golf from Dr. Tara McKenna, Director of FGCU's PGA Golf Management program (PGM), and Janet Kernan, Coordinator of PGA Golf Management Operations.
Regarding how the program supports and ties in with FGCU’s strategic plan, Dr. McKenna explained that PGM develops extensive community ties through internship and post-grad job placement at golf facilities locally.
“We supply a tremendous amount of critical labor in-season to local golf courses, which elevates partnerships for regional impact (No. 3). As a cohort degree, we've embedded several student success-driven measures that contribute to a high four-year graduation rate (PBF Metric 4),” said Dr. McKenna.
Through their practical experience and training, McKenna and Kernan demonstrated the discipline of golf, explained the components of golf equipment, showed the architecture of a golf course, and answered questions from attendees with varying levels of golf knowledge.
The highlight of the event was the opportunity to experience FGCU’s state-of-the-art PGA golf simulator, where students take their PGM classes in Sugden Hall. The Swing Performance Lab consists of two full-swing hitting bays equipped with TrackMan™ Launch Monitors that provide valuable ball flight feedback. Attendees brought their own clubs or used ones provided by McKenna and Kernan.

Dr. McKenna, who earned her doctorate in Applied Learning Sciences at the University of Miami following degrees from the University of North Carolina Greensboro and James Madison University, leads one of the most geographically desirable golf management programs in the country, with over 140 courses within an hour of campus. When asked about the PGM Virtual Open House (VoH) and its accessibility to the Eagle community, Dr. McKenna provided insight into this opportunity.
“The PGM VoH is an opportunity to learn about the PGM program virtually. We deliver a detailed and informative presentation over Zoom™ to families from all over the country. They are offered twice a month, and registration can be found on our website. Anyone can request the link to listen to the presentation,” said Dr. McKenna.
Dr. McKenna emphasized the program’s connection to the local community as a venue for faculty and staff to support the PGA Golf Management program.
“Given that golf is the activity in SWFL and our students’ heavy integration in the local workforce, having a basic understanding of our program's local importance and connection to FGCU helps spread goodwill and positive messaging across the area. If you are at a golf course, chances are, an FGCU PGM alum or intern is working there!”
Dr. McKenna keeps a small email database of golf enthusiasts on campus, which she uses to send out information about local golf events, big sales, and golf access deals (mostly summer) around the community on a limited basis. Eagles interested in joining the list can send her a note requesting to be included.
The “Lunch and Learn Golf” event exemplifies how cross-departmental collaboration creates valuable professional development and networking opportunities at FGCU, strengthening the university's commitment to supporting women in leadership.
Looking ahead, the PGA Management program plans to host additional community engagement opportunities.
"Based on the great feedback from the ACE event, we are considering offering mini-sessions about the game to beginners during spring break and throughout the school year in which we can involve our students directly,” said Dr. McKenna.

The Lucas Center is seeking Faculty Partners for the Fall 2025 Student-Faculty Partnership Program (SFPP)
Applications are open through Sunday, April 13!
|
The Student Faculty Partnership Program (SFPP) at FGCU places one student and one faculty member in dialogue with each other for an entire semester.
Students work up to 6.5 hours per week in the paid role of teaching consultant to a faculty member, earning approximately $1,560 per semester.
Through this program, student consultants analyze, affirm, and support the revision of classroom practice in the context of one of the faculty partner's courses with the goal of maximizing engagement and learning for all involved.
Student and faculty partners take a range of approaches to their collaboration, starting with a focus on classroom practice and often expanding to consider curriculum, assessment, inclusion, and other dimensions of teaching. Overall, student and faculty partners work to develop a dialogue in the interest of improving the course.
If you are interested in learning more about the SFPP you can read about the program and watch a video in the FGCU 360 feature here or visit the SFPP section of the Lucas Center website here.

| | Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (ORSP) Announcements |
ORSP is excited to announce that Effort Certification will be going live in Workday in February 2025!!
ORSP will be holding training sessions in Workday Learning for Effort Certification Training. Whether you currently have an externally sponsored project or intend to apply for one in the future, this training is for you.
This training will show faculty and staff how to certify effort in Workday. Effort Certification is a requirement of Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200.430 which contains the federal regulatory requirements for internal controls over certifying time expended on externally funded sponsored projects.
The University's practice is to utilize after-the-fact effort reporting to certify that salaries charged, or cost shared to sponsored awards, are reasonable and consistent with the work performed. It requires that each employee whose salary (or portion of salary) is charged to an externally sponsored project certify that the amount that the sponsor is billed for his/her work is reasonable in relation to the work that the employee actually performed.
All individuals involved with the administration and conduct of externally sponsored award activities, including central and departmental sponsored project administrators, principal investigators, and other research personnel must comply.
While we understand that not all projects are federally funded, Uniform Guidance also requires us to treat all projects with consistency so the effort certification will be on all externally sponsored projects.
Please sign up for one of these sessions using the link below before the session date.

Implementing Effort Certification in Workday
With the assistance of Information Technology Services (ITS), ORSP will be initiating Effort Certification in Workday.
It requires that each employee whose salary (or portion of salary) is charged to an externally sponsored project certify that the amount that the Government is billed for his/her work is reasonable in relation to the work that the employee performed. All individuals involved with the administration and conduct of externally sponsored award activities, including central and departmental sponsored project administrators, principal investigators, and other research personnel must comply.
The labor provided by an employee often is called his/her "effort." The method by which an employee certifies his/her effort depends on whether the employee is "non-exempt" (also called "hourly" i.e., that he/she is paid by the hour and fills in bi-weekly time sheets), "exempt," (also called "monthly," i.e., that his/her salary is stated by the month, semester, or year, he/she does not fill in bi-weekly time sheets), faculty, (9-month, 12-month, or out-of-unit) or student (including OPS salary who also fills in bi-weekly time sheets with the hours worked on each project they are assigned.)
Effort Certification will be initiated by ORSP in Workday within 60 days after the end of each semester, fall, spring, and summer. The effort certification will be routed for approval and review at the college level grant/budget manager, then to the employee, then to ORSP. Student/OPS effort will be certified by the principal investigator for the project, not the student/OPS worker. Once you log into Workday, the effort will show under notifications. There you will review the effort and decide whether it is the amount committed and hit approved. If the amount is not what you expect to see, you must hit "send back" with a comment on what the issue is, so the effort can be checked and adjusted, if necessary.
We ask that you not hit the "Change Effort" button. The changing of effort requires ORSP to review the budgeted amount and compare with the effort shown in Workday. Once confirmed, the department will enter any salary adjustments, if needed.
The following is an expected schedule for the Effort Certification to be initiated in Workday:
-
Fall – ORSP will send notifications to grant/budget managers review in mid Jan – Feb will run Fall effort - Should have all effort certified by March/April.
- Spring – ORSP will send notifications to grant/budget managers review in late May will run Spring effort in June - Should have all effort certified by July/Aug.
- Summer –ORSP will send notifications to grant/budget managers in September and will run Summer in Oct. Should have all effort certified by Nov/ Dec.
ORSP will be announcing training sessions for grant/budget managers, principal investigators and employees that include handouts with instructions regarding effort certification prior to the release.
One can also sign up for a training on the Workday Open-Lab Sessons when they are announced. It is scheduled for April 4, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. In the meantime, please reach out to ORSPwith questions.
