Post-tenure review?

Faculty colleagues –

Recently, FGCU administration sent out a proposed regulation on post-tenure review for comment. This took some by surprise as we are a non-tenure institution, and there appeared to be some confusion among the faculty. In an effort to enhance internal communication, and clear up any confusion on this particular regulation, please allow me to explain.

Last year, the Florida Board of Governors passed BOG Regulation 10.003, Post-Tenure Faculty Review. This regulation specifies the review of all tenured faculty at the 12 institutions in the System. In response to the BOG regulation, FGCU produced guidance in the form of a university regulation to implement the new review process. While we do not award tenure at FGCU, previously tenured faculty members from USF-Ft. Myers retained tenure as they joined FGCU in 1997.

Today, there are two faculty members remaining from the original cohort of tenured, USF-Ft. Myers faculty. Even with only two faculty members involved, we still needed official guidance on post-tenure review that comports with BOG Reg 10.003. The last two faculty members with tenure will be reviewed accordingly, thus the need for Regulation TBD, Post-Tenure Review.

Bottom line – Regulation TBD, Post-Tenure Review has no effect on anyone at FGCU except two faculty members. The rest of the faculty will not be subject to the post-tenure review process.

I hope this answers your questions about this regulation, and also sheds light on the process of complying with BOG regulations, policies and guidelines. At Cabinet, we write, amend, discuss and approve items like this every week, and most of you see only the end of the process – the open comment period before the item is put into practice. The Cabinet member responsible for the item collects the comments and modifies the item as needed. As our proposed regulation matches the intent of 10.003, there is no need to modify the proposed language.

Thank you,

Mark Rieger | Provost

Shelton Weeks’ Sustainable Real Estate course contributes to FGCU’s graduation requirement

As the Director of the Lucas Institute for Real Estate Development & Finance, Dr. Shelton Weeks has had the opportunity to facilitate interactions between students and planning and development experts who are working diligently to improve the environmental outcomes associated with the growth of the region.

Through student reactions to these interactions and the significance of their implications for the built environment in Southwest Florida, Dr. Weeks identified an opportunity to make this an area of emphasis in FGCU’s academic real estate programs. This focus led him to develop the Sustainable Real Estate course (REE 2610), which would satisfy the Sustainability Course Graduation Requirement (SCGR).

The goal of the course is to examine topics that will allow students to evaluate critically the social and financial implications of sustainability in the built environment by examining the historical foundations, future expectations, and economic logic of sustainable real estate.

“In order to create a learning environment with a high degree of student engagement, our plan is to lean heavily on the expertise that is found across the region so that when different topics are introduced we can point to examples that will be familiar to many of our students.”

Dr. Weeks has spent the last three decades studying real estate. As he explains, he is an advocate of a holistic view of the real estate development process and making the investment required to do things the right way. He became interested in creating a SCGR course to teach FGCU students how to recognize the costs and tradeoffs linked to growth and development for better decision-making and societal outcomes from the development process.

“The sustainability issues surrounding the use of real estate are large and complex. Consequently, failure to include coverage of these issues would leave our program incomplete and would be a great disservice to our students and the region.”

Through Dr. Weeks’ course, students will examine past failures and some of the effective strategies for minimizing the negative environmental impacts of real estate use and development, thereby broadening student perspective of sustainability.

“In particular, demonstrating the positive impacts of best practices in the development and use of real estate assets shows students how sustainability efforts can be more than a ‘cost center’ and actually contribute to the success of projects and quality of life.”

Dr. Weeks is working with his Department Chair, Dr. Amelia Biehl, to create a plan for launching the REE 2610 class in the 2024-2025 academic year.

“As soon as this is in place, we will start promoting the class with students and lining up industry experts to help us bring the topics to life in the classroom!”

Provost Faculty Fellows applications due May 31, 2024

The Office of the Provost invites applications for Provost Faculty Fellows for Academic Year 2024-25. The Provost Faculty Fellows program allows faculty who aspire to administrative appointments to gain experience, develop networks, and hone skills necessary to serve in leadership roles.

Up to two Fellows will be appointed each year. Fellows propose and execute a project of finite length (six months to one year) and mutual interest to the faculty member and the Office of the Provost. Faculty members may work directly with the provost or any of the associate provosts or associate/assistant vice presidents in Academic Affairs.

Serving as a Fellow does not guarantee an administrative position for participants; rather, the program is designed to build the bench of talent available to the university as administrative opportunities arise.

While each project is different, Fellows generally:

  • are mentored and supported by one or more leaders in Academic Affairs
  • attend regular meetings of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team or other groups, as appropriate
  • produce a deliverable that sets or influences FGCU policies, regulations, guidelines, or procedures
  • receive course release(s) necessary to fulfill the proposed project
  • receive funding for travel relevant to the completion of the proposed project or for professional development

Faculty interested in the program should submit a brief proposal (three pages maximum) covering the following:

a) This year, six themes have been identified as priorities:

  • Coache survey implementation
  • Sustainability Graduation Requirement
  • Digital transformation/innovation in curricula and courses
  • Assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Faculty Handbook Development
  • Campus aesthetics

b) Project description, including mutual benefits, outcomes, and impacts: the issue(s) to be addressed or problem(s) to be solved, and leadership experience/skills gained.

c) Time commitment: total length of project and course release(s) required.

d) Endorsement by the faculty member’s chair and dean/director to participate (can be done via email).

Submit applications by May 31, 2024, to Julie Eacho by email or in the Office of the Provost, 314 Edwards Hall. Applications will be reviewed by the Provost’s Council and applicants will be notified of the outcome by July 12, 2024.
