FGCU creamery, an opportunity to provide on-campus jobs for students and top-quality dairy products for SWFL

Left to right: Enjoying a free treat at FGCU’s first Ice Cream Social, Cara Ryan, coordinator in Academic Programs and Curriculum Support; FGCU President Aysegul Timur; Student Success Counseling Specialist Yvonne Goodson; Santiago Luaces, coordinator in the Office of Scholarly Innovation and Student Research; and Jaclyn Chastain, coordinator in Academic Programs and Curriculum Support.

Thank you for attending the Ice Cream Social last Tuesday! It was great to see people outside of their offices gathered to enjoy a free, sweet treat and a few moments to chat.

University leaders handed out over 250 servings in less than an hour, and if you are among those that didn't get any, be at the front of the line at another Ice Cream Social this Tuesday, June 25,12:30-1:30 p.m., outside the southeast corner of Ben Hill Griffin Hall. We will also do it again on these dates:

  • Wednesday, July 10
  • Tuesday, July 16
  • Wednesday, July 24

Some asked why FGCU is doing this. Summer schedules are crazy with camps, orientations, condensed format classes, renovations to prepare for fall. So first and foremost, the university wants to show appreciation for the outstanding faculty and staff at FGCU and wants to allow a moment to relax and socialize. Second, the university is exploring an idea for a student-operated business in ice cream.

Thank you to all of you who clicked on the QR code and took the survey last week. Your feedback will help guide the process of flavor development and customer preferences for an eventual business launch in the next academic year. Look for the QR code at the upcoming events.

Many universities have successful creameries. A good example is the UDairy Creamery in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources at Executive Vice President and Provost Mark Rieger’s former institution, University of Delaware.

“There are dozens nationwide, all of which provide on-campus jobs for students and high-quality dairy products to their communities. To me, it's a no-brainer for an innovative university with an entrepreneurial mindset like FGCU,” said Provost Rieger.

Are you ready for more of the freshest ice cream in the area? Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday and hearing your best thoughts on this concept!

Additional Provost Faculty Fellow Topic Identified

Call for Applications

The Office of the Provost has identified another area not previously included in the for call for Faculty Fellows for Academic Year 2024-25.

We now invite applications from faculty interested in helping to build infrastructure for graduate programs, faculty, and students, including but not limited to items such as a Graduate Student Handbook, Graduate Studies Faculty resource webpage, updated and online graduate student orientation materials, updates to documents such as the General Graduate Academic Policies (GGAP), universal admission requirements, the three-minute thesis (3MT) and similar areas of interest to the applicant.

If selected to be a Faculty Fellow, the faculty member will work closely with Associate Provost Dawn Kirby and Director of Graduate Studies Shannon Acosta, for one to two semesters to help accomplish specific outcomes identified by the applicant as being of primary interest.

While each project is different, Fellows generally:

  1. are mentored and supported by one or more leaders in Academic Affairs
  2. attend regular meetings of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team or other groups, as appropriate
  3. produce a deliverable that sets or influences FGCU policies, regulations, guidelines, or procedures
  4. receive course release(s) necessary to fulfill the proposed project
  5. receive funding for travel relevant to the completion of the proposed project or for professional development

Faculty interested in the program should submit a brief proposal (two-page maximum) covering the following:

  1. Goals: Specific outcomes and products to be completed.
  2. Time commitment: total length of project and course release(s) required.
  3. Endorsement by the faculty member’s chair and dean/director to participate (can be done via email).

Serving as a Fellow does not guarantee an administrative position for participants; rather, the fellowship is designed to build the bench of talent available to the university as administrative opportunities arise.

  • Submit applications by July 5, 2024, to Julie Eacho by email or in the Office of the Provost, 314 Edwards Hall. Applications will be reviewed by the Provost’s Council and applicants will be notified of the outcome by July 26, 2024.
