Exchanging Ideas and Cultivating Networks
Earlier this month, Senior Consultant Mahauganee Shaw (pictured left) represented Academic Search at the Summer Institute for the New Leadership Academy (NLA) in Salt Lake City, Utah. NLA is committed to helping diversify the leadership pipeline in higher education to better reflect the students and communities that we serve and annually selects a class of Fellows who are campus professionals and scholars from across campus units primed for advancement into more senior leadership roles. The Fellows gathered with their coaches, facilitators, and facilitators-in-training for a week-long deep dive into a guided curriculum that challenged them to tap into their personal power to center equity in their leadership.
Dr. Shaw joined the group for the latter half of the week and had two opportunities to present to the Fellows. The first presentation, “Leadership During Times of Crisis on Campus,” stemmed from Dr. Shaw’s research on emergency management in higher education. The second presentation, “Preparing for the Next Stage of Your Career,” provided the Fellows an opportunity to review their own CVs and reflect on their positioning and preparation for advancement to more senior levels of leadership.
In addition, Maya Ranchod Kirkhope, Vice President and Senior Consultant, and Andrea Cowsert, Consultant, attended the LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education 2022 Leadership Institute held in Pasadena, California, on June 15-16. Academic Search was a proud sponsor of this terrific Institute attended by over 100 participants from around the country who aspire to leadership roles in higher education. The Institute included a number of sessions dedicated to leadership development, along with insightful dialogue on issues of importance to members of the LGBTQ community. Ms. Kirkhope participated in two panel discussions on executive search best practices in addition to individual sessions with participants who wanted more focused discussions on their career trajectory.
Chief Operating Officer Shawn Hartman also spoke as part of a panel discussion entitled "The Higher Education Workplace Landscape: Part I–Navigating a Turbulent Recruiting and Hiring Landscape" sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). Joined by Fredericka Hayes, associate vice president of human resources for Ferris State University, Dr. Hartman discussed the current market conditions for recruiting and hiring and shared insights on how the great resignation, shift to remote and hybrid work, and COVID-19 fatigue are impacting recruitment at all levels of higher education.
