Academic Search Partners with CUMU
What will the state of higher education be in 2030? For its 2020 Annual Conference, the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) invited transformational leaders to imagine higher education ten years from now and share perspectives on how to push the conversation forward. Academic Search was honored to sponsor this virtual event and our president, Jay Lemons, served as moderator for the keynote address. He was joined by an exceptional trio of leaders: Terri Givens, CEO and founder of The Center for Higher Education Leadership, now known as Brighter Higher Ed; Michael Fitts, president of Tulane University; and Michael Hinojosa, superintendent of Dallas Independent School District. We invite you to watch their session.
Other Recent Conference Engagements
Last month, Academic Search partnered with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to lead a salient discussion entitled Presidential Success Strategies: The Value of Onboarding and Executive Coaching. Academic Search President Jay Lemons served as facilitator, and panelists included Dolly Martínez, The CUNY chancellor’s chief of staff and associate vice chancellor for the executive office; Steve Titus, the practice leader for Academic Search’s Executive Coaching Practice; and Ginny Horvath, Senior Consultant.
Senior Consultant Andrea Warren Hamos presented at The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) CAO Institute earlier this month. She facilitated a session on Building Strong Academic Affairs Teams with panelists Sandra G. Affenito, Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Norwich University; Jeffrey Frick, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at Washington & Jefferson College; and Kathy Ogren, Provost at University of Redlands. They spoke about approaches to defining roles and developing and recruiting talent to the academic team, including searching for, hiring, and onboarding new administrators. Many other Academic Search team members were also in attendance and enjoyed interacting with participants, even virtually.
Podcast: Leaders on Leadership with Jay Lemons
In his second episode of Leaders on Leadership, Jay Lemons speaks with Dr. Bill Kibler, a Senior Consultant at Academic Search who recently retired as president emeritus of Sul Ross State University (TX) after a distinguished 43-year career in higher education. Dr. Kibler discusses courageous leadership, the challenges facing higher education leaders in the midst of the pandemic, and the importance of honesty, integrity, and trust in building strong teams.
In his third episode, Jay is joined by Dr. Rich Ekman, President of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), who recently announced his plans to retire after 20+ years at the helm. Dr. Ekman reflects on what he learned on his path to the CIC presidency and addresses the characteristics of good leaders. In addition, he discusses how CIC's professional development programs can help senior leaders do their jobs better and advance their institutions more effectively.
Bethany Zecher Sutton, an alumna of the HERS Leadership Institute, recently served as a program associate for the 2020-2021 cohort, guiding participants through conversations designed to increase institutional knowledge and self-awareness, build networking skills, and explore successful mentoring relationships. HERS (Higher Education Resource Services) is a leadership development and research organization dedicated to creating and sustaining a diverse network of women leaders in higher education and provides a variety of programs that support women in various stages of their careers. Bethany is proud to play a role in supporting the Leadership Institute and in turn the leadership development of women in the academy.
