Intensifying Instruction: Accelerating Learning Outcomes
for Students with Disabilities
March 18, 2022
1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EST
Guest Presenters: Starr Lederer & Meagan Walsh
Weidman Elementary, MiMTSS TA Center
At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, the Chippewa Hills School District (like other districts), found itself with a reading crisis. Many students–far more than in a typical year–had finished the year with reading scores that were far below grade level expectations. There was a clear need to accelerate literacy outcomes. So, Chippewa Hills partnered with MiMTSS Technical Assistance Center to conduct a model demonstration of Data-Based Individualization (DBI). DBI is a systematic, evidence-based process for intensifying literacy instruction. During this webinar, team members from Weidman Elementary will share their DBI implementation story and how DBI implementation is accelerating outcomes for students experiencing significant and persistent difficulty in reading.
Take-aways:
  1. Implementing DBI at Weidman has necessitated and facilitated improvements to instruction in foundational tiers.
  2. Para-professionals and certified teachers are working together to deliver daily interventions with >70% fidelity and ensure that all students with demonstrated need have access to the reading intervention they deserve.
  3. As a result, 13% more students met benchmark expectations in January than in September. (the largest improvement since 2011 when the district began using the data management system.)

accelerate learning. This talk provides an overview of current research on how educators and school systems can best support these learners.
Take-aways:
  1. Practical techniques that support older emergent readers in classrooms.
  2. Research-based suggestions for districts with and without newcomer centers.
  3. Resources that can be used immediately to support newcomers and colleagues.

Using Data Analysis to Accelerate Student Outcomes: Washington Middle School's Story
April 27, 2022
10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. EST
Guest Presenters: Joel Asiala, Karmen Markham,
Lynnette Borree & Sierra Bishop
Washington Middle School & Copper Country ISD
Data analysis is central to a quality MTSS framework that is supportive of all
learners. The seventh-grade team at Washington Middle School in Calumet has embraced an approach to address specific needs identified using their Early Warning Indicators (EWI) data. During this webinar, staff from Washington Middle School and Copper Country ISD share the story of their implementation efforts aimed at accelerating learning outcomes for their 7th-grade students in a pilot program called “Flex.”
Take-aways
  1. Teachers meet as cross-department teams to monitor student success by analyzing attendance, behavior, and course proficiency data. They routinely review data to monitor student progress.
  2. This intervention is designed to be flexible so that students who are identified can move into intervention and eventually move out of the intervention if/when they no longer need this type of support.
  3. There are a variety of things scheduled during that time so students can get immediate support from their teachers.
