Key Assessment Practices for Acceleration:
Implementation in Action
October 6, 2021
12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. EST
Guest Presenters: Dr. Adrea Trunkenmiller & Lindy Johnson
Michigan State University
Each year students enter Michigan classrooms with a wide variety of strengths and learning needs. The larger variability of learning experiences students had in 2020 has made this point more salient than ever before. The only way to understand students’ development is through informal and formal assessment. However, it is also more imperative than ever to use valuable school time to prioritize instruction and limit compliance-oriented assessment. In this session, presenters will provide concrete criteria and research-based examples of how districts/schools can reduce assessment time and accelerate learning through focusing on essential skills and clearly targeted assessment purposes. Presenters will draw from existing resources. They will highlight the specific high leverage instructional decisions and associated high-quality literacy assessments from the Early Literacy Assessment System Guide and the Learning Progressions for Developing Skilled Readers and Writers. Additionally, a classroom implementation example will be provided, outlining how teachers can use data to prioritize curriculum resources and instructional strategies.
Accelerating Math Learning with Targeted Supports
November 4, 2021
4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST
Guest Presenters: Dr. Diane Owen-Rogers & Mikel Vallier
Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency
In this webinar, participants will be introduced to the Math Recovery program. Specifically, participants will learn more about how the program uses diagnostic assessments to identify what support students might need to stay on grade level. Presenters will also share examples of targeted supports. Success stories from educators that have implemented Math Recovery will also be shared.
Integrating Social Emotional Behavioral and Mental Health Supports to Promote Acceleration
November 10, 2021
3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST
Guest Presenters: Lauren Kazee & Leisa Gallagher
Michigan Department of Education
Educators are well aware of the unique strengths and needs of their students. If children are to be safe, healthy, engaged, challenged, and supported, educators must incorporate social, emotional, behavioral instruction and support within educational programming. It can be challenging to fit in all this content during the school day. This session provides information on the importance of addressing the child's needs and strategies to promote accelerated learning.
Accelerating Literacy Outcomes: Implementation in Action
November 18, 2021
3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST
Guest Presenter: Jennifer Saylor
Muskegon Heights Public School Academy
It is well known that informed educators and leaders are the best insurance to ensure class-wide instruction prioritizes essential literacy skills, prevents difficulties, and accelerates learning. The investment in educator’s language and literacy knowledge is a springboard to examining and enhancing curriculum resources and student materials to ensure they are aligned with reading science, prioritize the most essential skills, and reflect the culture and identities of the students and families/caregivers. Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System has begun its journey to provide educators, leaders, and staff high-quality learning in evidence-based reading approaches, instructional methods, and ways to meaningfully embed educational equity to support ALL learners. Opportunities to apply the newly learned literacy approaches and instructional methods in the classroom setting are occurring throughout the school year. Come hear about their successes, multi-year literacy plan, and how all of this folds into their work for the Michigan Comprehensive State Literacy State Development Grant.
