Accelerated Learning Webinar Series
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and the MiMTSS TA Center are announcing a series of five webinars focused on accelerated learning. Each webinar in the series shares the common focus on strategically preparing students for success in grade-level content through the implementation of accelerated learning strategies. The webinars build upon the series of informational guides developed by MDE with assistance from Michigan educators.
Registration Details

Participants will only be required to register once and will receive one link to the webinar platform for the series. The same link is used for each webinar in the series. Tier 1 Grade Level Instruction: Essential Skills in English Language Arts
June 28, 2021 @ 3-4 pm EST
Guest Presenter Dr. Sharon Vaughn
Providing robust, Tier 1 reading instruction that supports all learners begins before the start of the school year. This session prepares educators for class-wide instruction in ways that will result in accelerating students’ reading progress. Methods to differentiate instruction and use curricular materials to meaningfully engage students will also be discussed.
Tier 1 Essential Math Skills
July 12, 2021 @ 12-1 pm EST
Guest Presenter Dr. John Woodward
Using coherent math instructional routines will support educators in differentiating math instruction to accelerate learning outcomes for all students. These routines help compensate for students having different levels of mathematical content knowledge and experiences in applying that knowledge. This session will outline the value of using a structured, cognitively guided approach to problem-solving using coherent instructional routines. Additionally, the presenter will discuss the role of visual representations in teaching the foundations of fractions.
Assessment Practices for Acceleration
July 26, 2021 @ 12-1 pm EST
Guest Presenter Dr. Nancy Nelson
Assessment to inform literacy and math instruction to meet the needs of all learners requires deliberate and informed attention. This session outlines ways for educators to use assessment in a dynamic way to accurately identify students’ assets and opportunities for acceleration. This session outlines how purposeful assessment data can be used to plan for robust, class-wide reading and math instruction that appropriately differentiates supports.
Accelerating Student Learning Through
Maximizing Student Engagement
August 9, 2021 @ 1-2 pm EST
Guest Presenter Dr. Kevin Feldman
This webinar will provide K-12 educators with a practical “tool kit” of evidence-validated instructional strategies to dramatically increase student engagement across the grades and content areas. As we welcome students to post-pandemic schooling there is an urgent need to accelerate learning for everyone, particularly those with various learning gaps and related academic challenges. While there is no simple solution or “silver bullet”, intentionally creating classrooms in which ALL students are dynamically engaged in rigorous academic literacy is a potential “game-changer”, especially when these practices are deliberately woven into the instructional culture across the school.
Integrating Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Supports with Academics to Accelerate Student Learning
August 16, 2021 @ 2-3 pm EST
Guest Presenter Dr. Clay Cook
Student learning is not solely driven by high-quality academic curriculum and instruction. To accelerate student learning, students need to feel like they belong, be emotionally well, and be supported within a proactive, predictable, and safe environment. This presentation will focus on the why what, and how of intentionally integrating social, emotional, and behavioral supports within a multi-tiered framework to ensure every student is able to access what they need socially, emotionally, and behaviorally to engage fully in their learning experiences. A recipe metaphor will be used to facilitate understanding of the essential ingredients that need to be combined together to promote specific social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes as enablers to academic and life success.
