News & Updates | May 2024

Dear Friends,

My son recently graduated college with a degree in Jazz Piano Performance. Truly, he has a gift, but he has also put in many hours of listening and learning and playing over the years. I look back to when he started lessons at age 8, learning the basic notes and playing with one hand. Piano was a bit of a chore. Then he added a second hand and learned chords. He eventually mastered pedals and inversions. The music became more complicated. Piano was a fun challenge. Eventually, he took all of these building blocks and started to learn how to improvise. His first attempts were not great, but he improved over time. Now, his improvisations flow seamlessly with the composer’s original piece. Piano is part of him. Playing brings him joy and is a gift to anyone who listens.

I see in these memories a reminder. We all have been given the gift of being created in love, by love, for love. When I accept that gift…open it, explore it, cherish it…I grow in love. When I accept that gift, God’s dream becomes my dream: for me to know and love God so well that all of my thoughts, words and actions become so infused with the love of God that what flows from me is indistinguishable from what flows from God. And what flows from me becomes a gift to myself and to those around me.

I have a lot more listening and learning and "playing" to do before I reach my own “graduation day," but with God's help, I'm taking it one step at time.

Peace,

Pray

A Prayer by Rabindranath Tagore

Let Your love play upon my voice and rest on my silence.

Let it pass through my heart into all my movements.

Let Your love, like stars, shine in the darkness of my sleep

and dawn in my awakening.

Let it burn in the flame of my desires

and flow in all currents of my own love.

Let me carry Your love in my life

as a harp does its music,

and give it back to You at last with my life.

Faith in Action

by Kathy Crosson, Ignatian Maine Leadership Team Member

In a continuation of our feature from last month on the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, I asked former JVC volunteer, Caro Woodard, about her Jesuit connections, what drew her to JVC, and the impact of her experience:

Caro Woodard, JVC ‘20 - ‘22, completed two years of JVC service. She started in Boise, Idaho, with the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, an organization providing comprehensive services and emergency shelters for women and children experiencing domestic and sexual assault. The positive experience led her to consider a second year with JVC, and Caro applied for and was offered the volunteer position at Cheverus High School. Caro mentioned that serving in a Jesuit high school afforded her a very rich exposure to the traditions and core components of Jesuit teachings in addition to living in community with others. Caro commented that, “being a JV twice allowed me to go deeper with my own spirituality and explore how schools and nonprofits are combating injustice in two locations. While vastly different, both experiences taught me the value of kinship and solidarity.”
