According To Hope

Last week, we began a series of articles on Unity's prosperity teaching, and we offered a few thoughts about the idea, "Name It and Claim It!"

Today, we continue along this line of thought with a brief exploration of what prosperity truly means.  Typically, we equate the word "prosperity" with "monetary riches."  The word comes from the Latin pro spero, which translates as, "according to hope."  Hope (in its noun form) is defined as "a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen."

We speak often in Unity about Faith, and rightly so, for it is the first of what we have termed "The Twelve Powers," but we rarely speak about the difference between Faith and hope; oftentimes the words are used interchangeably.  Even then there is confusion as to the true meaning of either or both of the words.  Faith is, according to Hebrews 11:1, "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."  In short, Faith is an inner knowing, beyond human reasoning, that there is a deeper reality than that which can be perceived through the "five senses."  We affirm our Statement of Faith every Sunday at Unity, which is:

"There is only One Presence and One Power in the Universe and in my life, God the Good, All Love."

The same statement (or similar statements) are spoken at every Unity service at over 1,000 Unity centers and churches worldwide.  When we have this assurance, and truly know that all is well, and unfolding as it is meant to, then we have no fear.  This is living a life of Faith.

Hope is the projecting forth of that Faith consciousness into manifestation, and it is closely allied with Imagination, another of our Twelve Powers.  While Imagination is visualization, hope is expectation that the good we desire, which can only come from God, the Good - for there is nothing, no thing, else in the Universe - will be made manifest.  Not in "my time," or in accordance with an agenda my ego manufactures for its own glorification, but in accordance with Divine Order, or, colloquially, "God's Time."  Faith and hope go well beyond a vague process of "believing in... something" or "wishing," with a half-hearted attachment to a specific outcome.  This realization is key to the unfoldment of the soul.

Unity co-founder, Charles Fillmore, wrote the following in his classic work, Prosperity:

A very important work in soul culture is the establishment of a faith substance.  Once we discern this law of soul building by faith, we find the Hebrew Scriptures full of illustrations of it.

The 1st chapter of Luke's Gospel tells us how Elisabeth and Zacharias were told by an angel that they would have a son and that his name would be John.  Zacharias was burning incense at the altar in the exercise of his duties as a priest.  This means that when the mind is looking toward Spirit, even if it be in a blind way, and is seeking spiritual things, it will become spiritualized.  The burning of incense typifies spiritualization.  Zacharias represents the perceptive and Elisabeth the receptive qualities of the soul.  When these two work in conjunction in prayer, meditation, and aspiration, the soul is open to the higher thoughts, or angels, that bring the promise of a new and definite state of consciousness.  Zacharias doubted the promise of a son because his wife was past the age of childbearing, and because of his doubts he was stricken dumb.  This means that when we perceive spiritual Truth and doubt it, we retard its outer expression; it cannot be spoken into manifestation through us because of our doubt.  All the growth is then thrown upon the soul.

I invite you to take the above passage from this core Unity text into prayer this week.  Sit with it a while, and come back to it as often as you feel led to do.

In summary, Faith is inner knowing and trust in Omnipresent Divine Substance, and hope is an expectation that our lives will be richly blessed with all we can imagine - for, as Children of God, we are already blessed!  Not some far-off time, not after we transition from these bodies into another plane, or an "afterlife," but now.  This correlates with our month's focus on Grace.

We enfold Grace and Oneness at Unity of Columbus, and we gather together in community each week to pray, sing, learn, and grow together.  We look forward to seeing you this Sunday!

Warmly,

The Spiritual Snippet

The Light of Unity

"In teaching the body to obey we begin with the very top of the head.
"The student may think that it is impossible to relax in this part of the body, but there are nerves and muscles both outside and inside the skull, and we may speak to them with the authority that comes from the inner self, and bid them let go all tension.   They will obey.
"We mentally direct our attention to the top of the head, and then slowly and firmly we repeat three times the word, 'Relax.'  We center our attention at this point for a short time, that the word of command may become operative.  We remember that it is not the personal self but the Presence within that is doing the work. "

Wisdom From Unity

"...We can never understand Truth or life until we give up, once and for all, the idea of favoritism in the universe, and until we stop praying to be forgiven before we have changed our own attitudes.  God plays no favorites.  If you have your finger in a socket and are being shocked, you can pray all you want but nothing will happen until you remove your finger.
"One may say, 'I was driving along, minding my own business, and a car careened around a corner and ran into the side of my car.  What did I do to deserve that?'  An insurance company report says that ninety percent of all accidents result from unconscious volition.  This means that some people are accident-prone.  Things always seem to happen to them, not by the caprice of God or by bad luck,  but by the law of attraction.
"Bad luck is simply a bad mental habit.   You make the difference!"
~ Eric Butterworth, from Celebrate Yourself!
