Holland Elementary Celebrates the Month of the Military Child

Last week, Holland Elementary dedicated the entire week to celebrating children in military families.

During the week, students collected treats for troops, presented military hero certificates, wrote letters to troops, and displayed military branch flags, purple ribbons, and photos of them with their own military families. Military members also participated in read aloud for the students.

Throughout the week, students wore red, white, and blue to show patriotism, yellow to support deployed troops, and purple and camouflage to support military children.

To end the week of festivities, Holland hosted a military family breakfast for their military students and their families.

Junior Port Ambassador Presentation

On April 26, students part of the Canaveral Port Authority Junior Ambassador Program presented their final project to the Board of Commissioners at the Canaveral Port Authority meeting to show what they have experienced and learned during the program.

The Canaveral Port Authority Junior Ambassador Program enables students from public high schools and private high schools within Brevard County to explore career opportunities at the Port. The program also seeks to provide workforce development to Port partners and community outreach.

During the school year, students meet with Port leaders in such areas as cruise, cargo, military, environment, hospitality, commercial space flight, and construction.

Parent Leadership Team Meeting

On April 14, the Parent Leadership Team kicked off their last meeting of the school year by sampling breakfast and lunch items from BPS Food and Nutrition Services. BrevardEdTech then wrapped up the meeting with a FOCUS tutorial that walked parents through the many features available to them.

If you are interested in joining the Parent Leadership Team next school year, please contact your principal and let them know you are interested in being chosen as your school’s ambassador.

Brevard Academic Team Finishes 2nd at Championship Tournament

The 2023 Brevard Academic All-Star team earned a 2nd Place finish at the Commissioner’s Academic Challenge (CAC) -- also known as the Florida High School Academic Championship. “Team Brevard” competed against 10 other Division I teams over a three-day period (April 21-23) at the Omni Orlando Resort. This is Brevard’s second Top Three finish in the last two years, having won the 2022 State Championship last year at Walt Disney World.

Selection of these high-achieving students began last fall during seven academic competitions (known as the BCAC) in which 15 high schools participated. The top seven players from these competitions were selected for their strengths in the following areas: art, English, foreign language, history, math, music, and science. Since January 9, coaches Mike Prince of Cocoa Beach High and Aaron LeBlanc of Rockledge High have practiced with the team every other Monday night at the BPS District Office in preparation for this State Tournament.

Congratulations to everyone on Team Brevard for their hard work, grit, and determination in capably representing BPS at this year’s State Championship event.

Cocoa High Kayaking Trips

Thanks to a generous grant from Lockheed Martin, Marine Science students at Cocoa High School participated in a series of hands-on kayaking trips, which focused on the health and sustainability of Brevard’s local waterways.

On three separate occasions, groups of students paddled out into the Indian River Lagoon, took water samples, and explored some of the living creatures of the estuary. Students then returned to campus and shared their knowledge and experiences with others. These trips were led by Marine Science teacher, Mr. Matthew Sandle, and Instructional Science coach, Mr. Dennis Mattson.
