ACT NOW: Tell Your U.S. Representative to Co-sponsor and Support H.R. 5795, the Overdose Prevention and Patient Safety Act!
42 CFR Part 2 (Part 2) is a law that regulates the sharing of substance use disorder (SUD) records. Protecting patients’ confidentiality is of the utmost importance but the outdated nature of Part 2 has created barriers for providing the best care possible to individuals with SUD. H.R. 5795, the Overdose Prevention and Patient Safety Act (OPPS) Act will align Part 2 with HIPAA for purposes of treatment, payment and operations. H.R. 5795 will be considered on the House floor the week of June 11th when many other bills addressing the opioid crisis will also be brought up for a vote.
We need you to call Congress this week and urge your U.S. Representative to cosponsor H.R. 5795 and vote yes when it comes to the House floor for a vote. Head to AHIMA’s Action Center where you can take action and find additional details.

AHA Coding News: Z55-Z65 Social Determinants
American Hospital Association

The AHA has worked to change this requirement to promote widespread use of these ICD-10-CM codes. As a result of these efforts, in early 2018, the AHA Coding Clinic published advice that allows the reporting of codes from categories Z55-Z65, based on information documented by all clinicians involved in the care of the patient. This advice was approved by the ICD-10-CM Cooperating Parties and will be incorporated into the next revision of the Official Coding Guidelines. This change is effective beginning Feb. 18, 2018.

Social determinants include societal and environmental conditions such as food, housing, transportation, education, violence, social support, health behaviors and employment. Numerous studies have demonstrated a link between economic status, social factors and physical environment as key influencers in health outcomes.
CMS NEWS: Declines in Hospital-Acquired Conditions Save 8,000 Lives and $2.9 Billion in Costs
U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; Jun 5, 2018

Data released today by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) show continued progress in improving patient safety, a signal that initiatives led by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are helping to make care safer. National efforts to reduce hospital-acquired conditions, such as adverse drug events and injuries from falls helped prevent an estimated 8,000 deaths and save $2.9 billion between 2014 and 2016, according to the report.

The AHRQ National Scorecard on Hospital-Acquired Conditions estimates that 350,000 hospital-acquired conditions were avoided and the rate was reduced by 8 percent from 2014 to 2016. Federal experts note that the gains in safety among hospital patients echoed earlier successes, including 2.1 million hospital-acquired conditions avoided between 2010 and 2014.
