Support SNAP and put food within reach
It's all over the news. Food banks and pantries are overwhelmed by the rapid increase in demand from hungry people. Legislation passed in March made it easier and safer to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps), but
it did not go far enough to address the level of food insecurity and hunger facing our communities.
On Monday, over 130 representatives signed a letter asking House and Senate leadership to strengthen SNAP by:
- Increasing the maximum benefit by 15%
- Raising the minimum benefit from $16 to $30
- Placing a hold on rules that weaken the program
On Wednesday, Senate Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
released a list of funding priorities, including a 15% increase to the maximum SNAP benefit.
3 Ways to Speak Out for SNAP
- See if your representative signed the letter of support. If they did, thank them and ask for their continued support!
- If they didn't, ask them to support food access for hungry people in your community.
- Ask your senators to do the same thing. National partners have specifically asked people to reach out to Missouri Senators Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley.
