Help us Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the

Launch of a Movement

Join the PeaceWave and Donate Today!

The PeaceWave, a Minute of Silence, a Moment of Peace at noon in every time zone, was launched by Pathways To Peace from San Francisco in 1984 and gathers more and more strength as it circumnavigates the globe for its 40th year in observance of the United Nations International Day of Peace

this September 21st.

What started as a wave with a handful of people in 1984 became a Peacebuilding movement, now recognized by

three billion people around our world.

International Day of Peace Origins

  • Established by a unanimous United Nations resolution in 1981
  • On September 18, 1984, Pathways To Peace organized the first major civil society International Day of Peace in San Francisco.
  • 12:00 noon in 1984, in that first Peace Day Celebration in San Francisco, celebrants paused for the PeaceWave. In that minute of silence and moment of Peace, businesses stopped their cash registers, churches rang their bells, KRON (NBC) TV stopped broadcasting.
