SB268 Also Applies to Homeschooling and Private Schools
Georgia HB268, introduced as a measure to enhance school safety, poses significant risks that could undermine the very safety it claims to protect. If enacted, the implications of this legislation would be serious and far-reaching.
The House Education Committee convened for a hearing on March 3rd, during which Chairman Rep. Chris Erwin notably prohibited public commentary. Despite reviewing our prepared talking points, Rep. Erwin declined to distribute them to committee members, discreetly returning them to the desk without discussion.
Committee members posed a limited number of questions. The first question was: If a child is wrongly accused of being a threat, what is the process for removing their name? The answer was that there is no process for removing a child's name from the records. The bill vote promptly ensued. Subsequently, the bill advanced to the Senate on March 6th, where it was swiftly read and assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees law enforcement-related legislation.
