NEPA Needs Its Teeth Back!

In the summer of 2020, the Trump administration drastically weakened the rules requiring federal agencies to engage in a review process under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to identify any significant environmental, economic, social, or health impacts a project may have before it can begin.

These rules forced over 80 agencies in the federal government to put polluters and industry first, shield decisions from public scrutiny, and dramatically reduce public input on decisions to approve major sources of pollution—including oil and gas pipelines, coal export terminals, and fracking across millions of acres of public lands.

The Biden administration, through the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), has proposed new rules that would start to undo the damage to the NEPA review process done by the previous administration.

Take Action!

The public comment period for these proposed new rules runs through November 22.
