In favor of OP 004 and OP 008:
I am in favor of OP 004 and OP 008 as they are the most sensible maps presented. These maps keep the San Fernando Valley in one district and also keep an African-American district. They are successful in keeping over 90% of LA County cities and communities whole while also keeping the Las Virgenes Malibu COG whole. Both maps also adopt the LA City Council Redistricting Commission goal of not moving a SFV district south of Mulholland Drive.
Over the next three days, the Los Angeles County Citizen Redistricting Commission will be meeting to discuss publicly submitted maps which have been drawn for potential districts.

The Commission is considering a few maps, some of which would split up the San Fernando Valley. We need you to make your voice heard in order to make sure the Valley receives fair representation.

To make sure the Valley is kept whole in the final redistricting maps, VICA urges you to tell the commission to support maps OP 004 and OP 008. You can view these maps by clicking the links below:
In VICA's proposed maps, we:

  • worked to keep all legally recognized communities whole and if a split was necessary, used the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council lines secondarily
  • worked to keep over 90% of Los Angeles' County cities and communities whole
  • kept the cities of Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village (LA County), and Malibu together, as they are in the Las Virgenes Malibu Council of Governments together.

Along with voicing support for these maps, VICA urges you to tell the commission that you support the San Fernando Valley Redistricting Coalition Principles:

  1. To ensure full and adequate representation for the San Fernando Valley, we support a Valley-only district.
  2. If it is necessary to merge one Valley seat with areas outside of the Valley, the preference is to have a minimum of 50% of that district within the San Fernando Valley.
  3. Any San Fernando Valley district should not go south of Mulholland Drive.
  4. VICA’s goals for redistricting are non-partisan and are only to be shaped by the interest of maximizing representation and advancing goals of Valley businesses and residents.
  5. All recognized communities should be kept together as part of compact and contiguous districts which shall recognize geographic features and natural boundaries.
Please send in comments through the online form or call into the meetings.
