Local Seniors Receive Tax Assistance through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

United Way NELA strongly believes in providing supportive services to ensure adults can live independently to the fullest extent possible. Thanks to a collaboration with the Ouachita Council on Aging, University of Louisiana Monroe’s Delta Alpha Psi students, and Jay Lewis, ULM Accounting Instructor, this year’s Virtual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) focused on providing an important, supportive service to many of our local senior citizens.

Senior tax filers with annual incomes of $57,000 or less were able to drop off their tax documents at the Ouachita Council on Aging, returning later to review and sign their completed tax returns. In total, we were able to coordinate the completion of 45 tax returns for these seniors! This collaboration wouldn't have been possible without the help of 15 volunteers and over 200 hours of time so generously given by the Ouachita Council on Aging, ULM’s Jay Lewis, and the ULM Delta Alpha Psi students.

Thank you for joining with us to fight for economic opportunity for every person in Northeast Louisiana!

Ready4K Updates:
May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and United Way NELA and Ready4K want those who need support to know that You Are Not Alone.

The last year has seen a 93% increase in the number of people taking anxiety screeners and a 62% increase in the number of people taking depression screeners.* Many of us could use a little more support right now.

Fortunately, there are many resources available and Ready4K put together a curated set in this week's blog post.

Drawn from the library of resources gathered for the Ready4K trauma-informed program, they've included both immediate support services and information to learn more.

Whether these are resources you could use or something to share with others in your life, we invite you to bookmark this page so it's ready whenever you need it.

Through Ready4K, one of our evidence-based engagement programs, United Way of Northeast Louisiana are empowering and equipping families with the knowledge and skills to support child development. Find out more about this enrichment program here: https://ready4k.parentpowered.com
