Helpful Reminders

Below is a recommended starter checklist of essential items and key actions to take before a storm hits. We encourage you to use this as a guide and to include any additional items specific to the needs of your clients, as individual care requirements may vary.

  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Battery-powered radio 
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Prepare emergency evacuation plans
  • Maintain an adequate supply of medication
  • Fire extinguishers (checked and up to date)
  • Setup contact protocols for family members
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
  • Whistles (for signaling help)
  • Blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, and test strips
  • Assemble a traditional emergency preparedness kit
  • Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • A change of clean clothing in a protective bag or storage container
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
