Quick Trip Guide

Beauty

of Japan

Tokyo - Nagano - Kanazawa - Kyoto

Experience the best this fascinating country has to offer with the energetic cosmopolitan city of Tokyo, the ancient spiritual city of temples and shrines of Kyoto, the charming town of Nagano, nestled in the Japanese Alps, and Kanazawa, famous as the origin of Zen Buddhism. Plus the fascinating Snow Monkeys, UNESCO World Heritage site farmhouses, and an array of culinary delicacies.

Day 1 –ARRIVE TOKYO

Upon arrival at Haneda or Narita Airport, meet your driver for your transfer to your hotel. After checking in, the remainder of the day is free for relaxation or independent sightseeing. Dinner will be on your own this evening.

Day 2 – TOKYO | CITY HIGHLIHTS

After breakfast, meet your local guide in the lobby for a private half-day tour of this fascinating city via public transportation. Our first stop Asakusa, Tokyo's old town where you can soak in the atmosphere of the Tokyo of old. Visit Sensoji, Tokyo's oldest temple and wander down Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. We'll take the subway across town to Omotesando to explore the ritzy flagship stores and Meiji Shrine, Tokyo's most famous Shinto shrine, dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji. You'll have the opportunity to write a wish on a small piece of paper and tie it onto the prayer wall, just as locals do. Your guide can instruct you to place some yen into the offering box, then bow your head twice, clap twice, and bow once more. Your guide will leave you to either return to your hotel via the subway*/taxi or continue independent sightseeing.

Day 3 – TOKYO MARKET AND SUSHI MAKING TOUR

Tsukiji Market, handled about 2,888 tons of marine products a day worth about 2.8 billion yen (US$20million) before half of it moved to its new location in Toyosu. Some 450 kinds of fish were received, from penny-per-piece sardines to golden brown dried sea slug caviar, a bargain at US$473 a pound.

While the inner market has moved to its new location, the outer market remains standing and you can take time to wander through, exploring both the vegetable and fruit areas plus the impressive seafood section. You will stroll around the market with a guide and will be able to try some tasty samples as you explore. Spend the rest of your day at leisure, perhaps visit the bustling Shibuya Crossing, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections. Surrounded by neon lights and towering screens, its an iconic spot that captures the city's vibrant urban energy.

Day 4 – TOKYO TO NAGANO

Today after breakfast, transfer by taxi to the rail station and take the Asama Bullet Train to Nagano, the mountain capital of the Japanese Alps. Upon arrival, you'll take a taxi for the short ride as your hotel will be near the station. After settling in at your hotel, the afternoon is at your leisure. Enjoy some independent sightseeing as you'll find this tourist-friendly resort town very easy to navigate. Dinner is on your own this evening and be sure and sample some of Nagano's specialties; delicious soba noodles, apples and sake, as well as oyaki dumplings, gohei mochi snacks, bamboo leaf-wrapped sasa-zushi; just a few of Nagano's culinary heritage.

Day 5 –NAGANO | JIGOKUDANI MONKEY PARK AND OBUSE TOUR

In the morning, meet your English speaking guide for a full day tour of the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park and the charming town of Obuse. We'll go by public transportation to view the famous Snow monkeys. Jigokudani literally means 'hell's valley' due to the steam and boiling water that bubbles out of small crevices in the frozen ground, and it's in these baths of this bubbling water that the resident Japanese Macaques like to bathe. The monkeys live in large social groups, so it can be quite entertaining to watch their interactions. Accustomed to humans, they can be observed from very close and almost completely ignore their human guests. The entrance to the park is located around a 20-minute hike away from the closest point reachable by car, however the hike is very leisurely and scenic, with moderate to no slopes. In the afternoon, we'll stop a nearby Obuse, known for its delicious chestnuts and also the home of Hokusai, the famous painter and print-maker from Japan's Edo period. Over 100 houses in the town participate in an "Open Garden" theme. If you see this sign in front of the house, it means you can enter the property and enjoy the gardens, giving you a unique insight into Japanese houses. No visit to Obuse is complete without stopping in at a local sake brewery for a taste of their delicious sak. Sak is a Japanese rice wine; an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting rice that has been polished to remove the bran. Returning to your hotel, dinner will be on your own this evening.

Day 6 –NAGANO TO KANAZAWA

After breakfast, take a taxi to the rail station for the one-hour ride on the Kagayuki Bullet Train to Kanazawa. Your driver will meet you for your transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. This historical jewel of mainland Japan, often called "little Kyoto", is frequently overlooked by foreign tourists. The central city is fairly compact and the best way to get around is walking and exploring the narrow side streets. The rail station's Tourist Information Center is a good place to start with their helpful staff. They'll provide directions, maps, and suggestions to visitors. A good way to relax would be the Kenroku-en Garden, ranked as one of the top 3 gardens in Japan. A short walk away is D.T. Suzuki Museum. Suzuki was famous for introducing Zen Buddhism to the West. Strolling around the garden and water features provides the perfect setting for contemplation or meditation.

Day 7 – KANAZAWA | SHIRAKAWAGO TOUR

After breakfast, meet your English-speaking guide for a full-day excursion to Shirakawa-go, traveling by public transportation (approximately 90 minutes). Nestled at the foot of Mt. Haku-san, this peaceful mountain village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its 114 traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some over 250 years old. Your guide will lead you through the village, explaining its history and unique architecture, designed to withstand the region's heavy snowfall. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant featuring hobayaki—meat or fish grilled on a magnolia leaf over an open flame—with alternative options available.

Day 8 – KANAZAWA TO KYOTO

After breakfast, enjoy a private transfer to the rail station to board the Thunderbird Express Train for a scenic two-hour journey to Kyoto. Upon arrival, your driver will transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, enjoy free time to explore Kyoto, Japan's spiritual heart, known for its beautiful temples, peaceful gardens, and rich cultural heritage. Dinner is on your own this evening, and your hotel concierge can recommend and arrange reservations at one of the city's excellent restaurants.

Day 9 – KYOTO | SILVER PHILOSOPHERS PATH WALKING TOUR

The Philosopher's Path is a pleasant stone path through the northern part of Kyoto's Higashiyama district. The path follows a canal which is lined by hundreds of cherry trees. Approximately 1.25 miles long, the path begins around Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) and ends in the neighborhood of Nanzenji. The path gets its name due to Nishida Kitaro, one of Japan's most famous philosophers, who was said to practice meditation while walking this route on his daily commute to Kyoto University. There are many small temples and shrines to stop off along the walk. Later, enjoy free time to explore on your own. Consider visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding through the forested hillside. This iconic shrine offers a serene hike and a glimpse into Japan's spiritual and cultural heritage.

Day 10 – DEPART KYOTO

After breakfast, meet your driver for your private transfer to either Itami or Kansai International Airport for your departing flight. As your journey through Japan comes to an end, take with you the unforgettable memories of its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. Safe travels, and we hope to welcome you back to Japan again in the future.

Travel Secrets They Don't Always Tell You

The most memorable vacations aren't always the ones with the biggest price tags—they're often the ones planned with the right knowledge. From knowing the ideal time to book flights and accommodations to understanding seasonal patterns, local events, and hidden gems, small details can have a surprisingly big impact on the overall experience. A little insight can mean fewer crowds, better value, and more time enjoying the destination instead of navigating unexpected surprises.

Sometimes the best opportunities are found by choosing an alternative itinerary or exploring destinations that haven't yet become overcrowded. These are the kinds of travel insights that rarely make the headlines but can completely transform a trip.

Travel is about more than simply reaching a destination. It's about making meaningful memories, discovering new perspectives, and experiencing places in ways that feel authentic and rewarding. Sometimes, the greatest travel secret isn't spending more—it's simply knowing more before you go.
