Dear Friends:
Based on data received from the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, PROP released these principal findings regarding NYPD arrest statistics for the first six months of 2024.
** PROP finds that in just 21/2 years under Mayor Adams, NYPD arrests have jumped by over 67%. Here are the specific comparative numbers: In the first 6 months of this year, the NYPD made 105,385 felony & misdemeanor arrests as compared to 63,018 arrests the Department made in the equivalent period in 2021..
** The NYPD's 2023 arrest numbers also increased significantly over last year's figures, going from 92,113 TO 105,383, a rise of over 14%.
** Across all arrest categories, 2024 arrest data -- January-June-- show that the NYPD persists in its discriminatory practice of targeting low-income people of color for minor infractions. PROP finds that in 2024, 88% of misdemeanor arrests involved NYers of color, compared to 88% in the first six months of 2023 and 87% in the equivalent period of 2022.
** Numbers in specific arrest categories also reflect a stark racial bias, the inevitable outcome to the NYPD's continuing commitment to racist "broken windows" policing: 90.7% of assault in the 3rd degree (a misdemeanor) arrests involve NYers of color; 93.4% of fare evasion arrests; 92.4% of possession of forged instrument arrests; 88% of weapon possession in the 4th degree arrests; 84% of petty larceny arrests; 89% of mischief in the 4th degree arrests; 89% of contempt in the 2nd degree arrests; and 81% of possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree arrests.
** Nearly 50% of the NYPD's felony arrests involve Black New Yorkers who make up 23% of the City's total population.
** Using the conservative estimate that one misdemeanor arrest costs the City $1750, the expense for NYPD misdemeanor arrest practices comes to about $580,000. per day
** Misdemeanor arrests make up the majority of NYPD arrests, consisting of over 55% of the arrests made in the first 6 months of this year.
Based on the NYPD's own reporting, these numbers expose the harsh truth that under Mayor Adams the NYPD has escalated its racist broken windows practices. How else are we to understand statistics showing that arrests have jumped by nearly 70% in just 21/2 years & that arrests for one offense category, fare evasion arrests, involves more than 93% NYers of color.
That stark racial disparity can only result from the intentional targeting of a specific community. NYC, its people & its political leaders should no longer tolerate, to say nothing of effectively promoting, racist police practices that everyday inflict harm & hardship on a selected group of the most vulnerable NYers.
