The piping plover — a shorebird unique to the eastern U.S. coast — relies entirely on beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes for every aspect of its daily needs.

These same beaches where plovers raise their chicks are popular recreation spots for humans. Disturbance, increased predators, and land development contributed to the bird being categorized as threatened on the Atlantic Coast and endangered in the Great Lakes.

But decades of scientific dedication to conserving the plover are aiding in its recovery and ensuring the preservation of its significant role in our natural heritage.

Discover the inspiring conservation success story of the piping plover, learn about ongoing research efforts to safeguard its future, and witness how the species is making a remarkable recovery — right here in our backyard.

Learn about the Paper Industry

ESF students and faculty are invited to hear from the Executive Vice President of a Fortune 500 company!

The Syracuse Pulp & Paper Foundation (SPPF) has invited Jack Carter, Executive Vice President, Packaging Corporation of America (PCA), to give a keynote address to students and faculty on campus at SUNY ESF.

Carter (ESF class of 1981) joined PCA as the Director of Papermaking Technology in March 2010 and has been the Executive Vice President of Mill Operations since January 2011. Prior to joining PCA, he had nearly 30 years of experience in the paper industry with various pulp and paper companies, most recently as the Vice President and General Manager of Abitibi Bowater's Calhoun, TN, mill.

In his current position at PCA, Carter has overall responsibility for mill operations at the company's eight paper mill locations. Under his leadership, PCA's mill network has had many successes, including the integration of the four paper mills acquired from Boise in 2013 and the subsequent paper machine conversions to containerboard grades at the DeRidder, LA; Wallula, WA; and Jackson, AL mills in the years following the acquisition.
