Short Vort: Discovering Our Inner Light this Rosh Hashana

"Let there be light!" may have marked the beginning of Creation, but Rosh Hashana is a day linked to darkness. King David tells us, "Blow the shofar in the concealment of the holiday" (Psalms 81:4). Rosh Hashana does falls on the first day of the lunar cycle when the moon is obscured. But why focus on darkness on a day when we commemorate Creation and renewal?

We often forget how chaotic darkness preceded the initial burst of light. On Rosh Hashana, we mimic this progression. We begin by recognizing the dark areas of our lives. We then start to search for that ray of inspirational light.

Each new moon pierces a dark sky with a tiny sliver of light. In ancient times, witnesses with discerning eyes would testify how they saw the emerging light. Once their testimony was accepted, the new month was declared. Much like those witnesses, on Rosh Hashana, we probe our inner darkness in search of our eternal light.

Rosh Hashana is not just about reflection but revelation - revealing a Godly spark that has been neglected and concealed. As we stand at the cusp of a new year, let us each recognize our immense potential. This coming year, "Let there be light!"

Shabbat Shalom.
