Short Vort:  A Taste of Freedom
On the fateful night of our redemption, the prerequisite for freedom in Egypt was to stay in our homes, place blood markings on our doorposts, and eat the Pascal lamb in family units.

Why were these our specific rites of passage?

My father once suggested that most nations are born in bloodshed. One would have expected that after 210 years of brutal slavery, vengeance would rage when the tables were finally turned. Yet, at that long anticipated moment, we were commanded to stay at home. We would leave Egypt with a "mighty hand" but one defined by self-restraint not revenge.

We were also born as nation in our homes demonstrating that the most fundamental unit of any society is the family. The power of the Jew is the home.  A value that has been perpetuated until this day.

Rabbi Daniel Green
