Short Vort: How to End Antisemitism

After millennia of persecution, Judaism developed a formula for celebrating Jewish survival. Purim introduces us to two elements not found in any other Jewish holiday: Mishloach Manot U’matanot L’evyonim - giving gifts of food to friends and charity to the poor (Esther 9:19).

Why are we obligated to give edible presents and handouts on Purim, more than any other Jewish celebration?

Purim celebrates our power as a nation to survive and provides us with a blueprint for redemption. Haman, like many historic anti-Semites, recognized our vulnerability. He described the Jews as a “scattered and divided people” (Ibid. 3:8). He observed a divided nation and recognized our weakness. 2,500 years may have passed, but divisions still plague us acutely. Purim provides the antidote. Purim challenges us to have empathy and care. Through gifts and charity to anyone who asks, we affirm our commitment to every Jew.

Next time someone gives you a few jelly beans on Purim recognize that they are much more than corn syrup and starch. That Purim jelly bean is the seed of Jewish redemption.

Shabbat Shalom
