Short Vort: A Friend in High Places

A while back, a book was released with the title "G-d: A Biography". The author, Jack Miles, attempted to describe the character traits of G-d by analyzing him as the protagonist of the Torah. This exercise has value because imitating G-d is a very Jewish concept. The Torah instructs us to “Walk in His ways” (Deut. 13:5) and “be holy" because He is (Lev. 19:2). The Talmud emphasizes that we should clothe the naked and visit the sick in order to emulate G-d’s kindness (see Sota 14a). But if G-d is so transcendent, how can we even begin to compare ourselves to Him?

The Rambam tells us that the fundamental underpinning of life is to "know G-d" - not to believe in him (Y"H 1:1). While belief is critical, our relationship is primary. Our challenge is to see G-d, by our side, in our everyday lives and feel His Divine Providence. There is no greater influence on our life than the friends we choose. G-d is our Friend, our Partner, and our Cheerleader. Once we realize we have a Friend in high places.... who wouldn't want to be like him?
