COVID-19 Food Insecurity : The Need
|
|
Preliminary results of the COVID-19 Pandemic update to our Community Needs Assessment shows food insecurity as the greatest need in our service area. This need is also substantiated by service data our programs have been providing since the beginning of this crisis.

COVID-19 Food Insecurity : The Reach
|
|
Pro Action's goal during this pandemic has been to assist individuals and families with meeting their basic needs. With their basic needs met, people can put that concern aside to focus on taking the next steps necessary in planning for the future. Proper nutrition is the most basic of human needs. Pro Action’s Nutrition programs and community efforts promote health and quality of life as we connect community members with healthy food to help make things a little easier.
- Senior Nutrition - Seniors need strength-boosting nutrition more than ever, yet face barriers to preparing healthy meals. Pro Action provides Senior Nutrition programs in partnership with Steuben and Yates County Offices for Aging.
- Farmers Market Coupons - Coupons are provided to participants of our WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program and Yates Office for the Aging customers for the purchase of locally grown, fresh fruits and vegetables at Farmers Markets during the Summer and Fall.
- Hope Center Keuka Food Pantry - is able to serve as the main food pantry for Yates County and is a turning point for individuals and families seeking to move toward self-reliance. The pantry works to stabilize families in economic crisis and support them as they strive for self-reliance and a better future.
- Summer Learning Experience - Pro Action is leading this program through a recent partnership with Steuben County DSS. The program typically operates for 6 weeks and serves students 8-15 years old. The program focuses on helping youth with social/emotional difficulties and/or disabilities by providing social, education and recreational opportunities along with weekly food deliveries.
- Emergency Funding from CSBG - Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) discretionary funds will be utilized primarily for direct client assistance in our service area for those whose needs have been impacted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Food Distributions - Partnerships with Food Bank of the Southern Tier and FoodLink to conduct community wide drive-thru, no-touch distributions of emergency food supply boxes in Steuben and Yates Counties, respectively.
- WIC (Women, Infants and Children) - ensures that Moms and their young children can access good nutrition, even when money is tight and buying healthy foods is a stretch. The program also provides education and guidance on health and nutrition.

Understanding Poverty
Separating the Myths and Facts
|
|
Myth:
People who face hunger are typically homeless and unemployed.
Fact:
Most individuals and families who are facing hunger are not homeless, and typically have at least one working adult in the household. Even with a job and home, many people struggle to get by due to challenges like under-employment, wages, and cost of living.
An important part of Pro Action's work is to build knowledge and understanding of the causes and conditions of poverty. Visit our
website to learn more about how Pro Action is building a deeper understanding about the experience of poverty.
