From career counseling to conquering challenges, student support at Adelphi

Happy New Year! 

With each new year (and decade) come ever-changing ways to embrace innovation and transformation. At Adelphi, we begin 2020 as relentlessly dedicated as ever to our students’ success—and we continue to pioneer new ways to provide exceptional student support.

Whether they are managing a challenging course or semester, looking for the perfect internship, preparing for their practicum or writing their doctoral dissertation, Adelphi students find the support they need. Our personalized approach to education begins with our dedicated faculty—Adelphi professors know their students’ names, and small classes highlight their academic needs and allow for individual attention. Early signs of academic struggle are met with guidance, counseling, advising and tutoring. Mentors across campus help nurture student ambition and provide guidance and opportunities to achieve their goals.
 
I’d like to share with you just a few of the remarkably thoughtful and effective approaches to student support here at Adelphi:

Taking a personalized path to a degree
Meet Kayla Pollock ’19 and see how the support she received from a faculty mentor helped her combine her interests in computer science and criminal justice. She's now getting her master's degree in cybersecurity.
Teaching skills to handle stress. Adelphi's new Resilience Project is helping students learn to successfully cope with the challenges they face in school and in life.
Putting students first. Matthew Wright, PhD, provides extraordinary support for the students in his physics courses, and he's sharing his innovative approach to teaching in op-eds and articles in leading higher education publications.
Paving the way to professional careers. Competition for spots in grad schools is intense for students who want to go into law, medicine, optometry and other professions. Our Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Fellowships helps Adelphi students plot a successful path.
Providing the academic support students need. College comes with a whole new set of academic demands. Luckily, Adelphi's Learning Center and Writing Center are there to help students boost their study, organizational and time-management skills.
Research: Emphasizing experiential learning
David Parkin, PhD, and Aaron Chia Yuan Hung, EdD, are two Adelphi faculty members who are engaging students in ways that go beyond traditional teaching. Read about the new techniques they are using to promote learning in “ Reimagining the Classroom , ” a feature in our 2019 Academic and Creative Research Magazine .
Volleyball and Men’s Soccer Set the Pace
It was another outstanding year for Adelphi’s fall sports , led by our volleyball and men’s soccer teams. Volleyball earned the program’s 12th-ever spot in the NCAA tournament. Men’s soccer made it to the second round of the NCAAs in a season in which the team rose to the program’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll, Coach Gary Book was voted the NE10 Coach of the Year, and the team’s coaching staff was named United Soccer Coaches East Region Staff of the Year. There were other highlights, too, including the field hockey team’s 14-5 record, six all-conference selections, and a final ranking of ninth in the nation. All in all, our fall sports teams combined for more than 15 all-conference honors and placed third in the NE10 Presidents’ Cup rankings, a measure based on the regular-season standings of all programs competing in league play.
Alumni making a difference: William Fuessler ’79
A member of Adelphi’s board of trustees, Bill Fuessler has been instrumental in recruiting seniors from Adelphi to IBM, where he serves as vice president and partner, global leader, Finance, Risk and Fraud, IBM Global Business Services. We thank Bill for his steadfast support for Adelphi’s students and the opportunities he gives them at IBM.
Momentum Tour 2019–2020
The Momentum Tour returns with our first events of 2020. After two events this upcoming week in Florida, I'll cross the country for gatherings in Los Angeles and San Francisco . If you're in the area, I invite you to join me to catch up on the latest news about our University and to visit with fellow alumni and friends.
Dr. Riordan is an internationally known expert and frequent speaker on leadership, diversity and inclusion, and career success. She has published nearly 70 academic and business press articles and is authoring  Shift Happens: How to Adapt and Thrive in a Rapidly Changing World of Work —a book on helping employees adapt to the changing workplace. Dr. Riordan’s TEDx talk, “Dare to Be Extraordinary,” has received more than 20,000 views. She has been interviewed by and written articles for media such as  The Financial Times , the Harvard Business Review , Forbes and HuffPost .
