2021 Academic and Creative Research Magazine

Adelphi faculty achieve breakthroughs, inspire artists around the world and advance research in some of today’s most critical areas. Our annual magazine celebrates their work in therapy resistance in tumor cells, health disparities in Black communities, healing arts in public spaces and other important topics. Explore what they achieved in a pandemic year in science, healthcare, social justice and the arts.
Taliban Expert on the Future of Afghanistan

Interim director of Adelphi's international studies program Jonathan Cristol, PhD, is an expert on Middle East policy, with deep understanding of the Taliban’s history. Author of The United States and the Taliban before and after 9/11, Dr. Cristol shares his predictions for life under the Taliban in Afghanistan and what we might expect from the new regime.
Raising Banners of Welcome and Inclusion

Leading our "Many Voices. One Adelphi." message is the renowned poet and our Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Jacqueline Jones LaMon, JD. Her welcome-back-to-campus campaign features banners across our main campus highlighting the diversity of our student-led organizations. They promote our vibrant and engaged community and the voices and experiences of all our students.
New Members of Our World-Class Faculty

This fall, we are joined by 22 new faculty members spanning all our schools and colleges and our University Libraries. Our mission to transform lives is enriched by their unique expertise and contributions.
Largest First-Year Class in Our History

This fall, Adelphi welcomes a landmark first-year class. A record 1,330 new students joined our Panther family, from 34 states and 23 countries. More than 300 transfers and 820 graduate students are continuing their academic journey with us this fall in our eight world-class colleges and schools. And we are joined on campus this year by 30 of our first community college students through our innovative Nassau-Adelphi Gateway program.
A Banner Year in Grants

Adelphi is the only New York college or university to earn a 2021 Digital Inclusion Grant to provide underserved communities with access to remote learning. Strengthening our mission to transform lives, this and many other grants we earned this year—despite the pandemic—help support our innovative programs and creativity, and advance academics and research.
Adelphi is making local, national and global news:

  • On Voice of America, Wahiba Abu-Rass, PhD, professor of social work, discusses the trauma felt by Arab and Muslim Americans after 9/11.
  • In Verywell Mind, Deborah Serani, PsyD, senior adjunct faculty member in psychology, discusses the pitfalls of sharing, and oversharing, on social media about one’s children.
  • In the education journal The EvoLLLution, Jodie Sperico, executive director of alumni engagement and Adelphi Fund, talks about the impact of alumni on enrollment.
  • In Newsday, Robert Goldberg, clinical associate professor of finance and economics, weighs in on why prices have gone up in the Long Island region.

We must be mindful that mixed in amongst the balloons, welcome-back receptions and Orientation parties on campus this fall will be students who have lost family members, faculty who have lost partners, and others enduring a prolonged struggle with the virus.
Joshua Altman, PhD, associate director of Adelphi’s Student Counseling Center, in a University Business feature op-ed, “Negative impacts and silver linings: Why our feelings about COVID are complicated”
