New Research at Adelphi Deepens Our Understanding of the Modern World—and the Ancient One, Too

Nobel Prize winner Albert Szent-Györgyi once said that “Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.” In this newsletter, you’ll meet six different faculty members who have done just that—created new knowledge and published striking discoveries in fields that affect our understanding of the human condition.


Research projects such as these—and there are many at Adelphi—help us to showcase the lifelong value of an Adelphi education, an education where students learn in small classes with faculty who are exceptional teachers as well as renowned researchers .  

With the support of our amazing Panther family and friends, we’ll be helping to make that education possible for many deserving students at our annual fundraising event, the President’s Gala , on Saturday, June 15. I hope you will consider joining us or helping to support our students' success.

A Historian Tells an Untold Story. Indigenous peoples often appear as caricatures in official histories and popular narratives of Japan’s 20th-century empire. A new book by assistant professor of history Kirsten Ziomek, Ph.D., paints a fuller picture of cultures that have long been marginalized.
The Art of Making Skeletons Speak. Internationally known anthropology professor Anagnostis Agelarakis, Ph.D., has unearthed amazing finds on digs in Greece. When his recent research uncovered the story behind remains he’d found, the world took notice.
Shedding Light on a National Tragedy. Research by Geoffrey Ream, Ph.D., associate professor of social work,  has revealed a shocking fact: Nearly one-quarter of young teens who died by suicide were LGBT.
Can Women Entrepreneurs Succeed in Male-Dominated, Conservative Countries? Research by Murat Erogul, Ph.D., assistant professor of management, shows they can—as long as they practice what he calls “strategic disobedience.”
Stigma, Homelessness and Mental Illness. Lauren Gonzales, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, combines various methods of research to better understand the factors that can prevent persons with mental illnesses from integrating successfully into their communities.
Exploring Hidden Aspects of Autism. Damian Stanley, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, has developed a test that may lead to the identification of subcategories of autism and the development of new interventions and/or treatments.
Dynasty: Women’s lacrosse wins ninth national championship
They missed their Commencement ceremony—but for good reason. Our women’s lacrosse team captured the program’s ninth national championship trophy , defeating four-time champion West Chester University 11-5 on May 19. Seniors on the team were missed by the more than 40 student-athletes who did walk at the ceremony, and they will celebrate with the Adelphi University Board of Trustees and leadership at a special recognition of their own on Friday, June 14.

The lacrosse victory didn’t end Adelphi’s spring season, though, as junior Victoria Major was in Kingsville, Texas, through May 24 competing in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It was Major’s sixth trip to the NCAA championships to compete in that event.
Alumni making a difference: Michael Tiedemann ’89
Michael Tiedemann and his wife, Christine, are ardent supporters of Adelphi who not only give their time to the University but have established an endowed scholarship to help make an Adelphi education attainable for even more students. We thank them for everything they do and are proud to be awarding them our President’s Award for Distinguished Service at this year’s President’s Gala on Saturday, June 15 .
Momentum Tour 2019–2020
The 2018–2019 Momentum Tour has just ended, but next year’s tour is set to begin late this summer. Make plans to join us on Thursday, August 15, at Clovis Point Vineyard in Jamesport, New York . The event, held in beautiful Long Island wine country, will be hosted by Dina and Mark Misk, whose daughter Morgan is a rising junior at Adelphi. It will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with old friends, share stories about your days at Adelphi, and get the latest news from campus.
