Dear Colleagues,

Throughout the global COVID-19 crisis, support and help have come from all directions within the Adelphi community—faculty leaders, alumni and students in the fields of epidemiology, healthcare, social work and psychology are tackling the pandemic head on.

The arts are also playing a powerful role in our togetherness, compassion and healing. This month, I want to share the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and University Professor Paul Moravec—his inspiring and joyful composition, " Light Shall Lift Us." More than 100 opera singers of all ethnicities—each singing from home—came together to participate in this amazing event.

A Song of Hope
Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and University Professor Paul Moravec gathered more than 100 opera singers for a virtual performance of “ Light Shall Lift Us ,” a work he created with his librettist, Mark Campbell. Listen and be lifted up.
A Healthcare Hero Shares His Story
Although he has a farm in upstate New York, Joseph Brennan, MS '20, came to Adelphi to become a nurse practitioner—and found himself in the midst of a global pandemic. Now a Class of 2020 graduate, he dreams of returning to his farm town to help those with no access to reliable healthcare.
Therapy moves online. Adelphi’s Center for Psychological Services now offers online counseling, providing accessible help for clients and our community while giving doctoral students the chance to learn the techniques of teletherapy.
Studying the emotional toll of COVID-19. Damian Stanley, PhD, assistant professor of psychology, is working with colleagues from across the country on an ambitious research project on the psychological and social effects of the pandemic.
A safe space for healthcare heroes. Rachel Ng, a registered nurse worried about bringing the coronavirus into her family’s home, is just one of the frontline healthcare workers temporarily staying safe in an Adelphi residence hall.
Feeding the front lines. Adelphi’s nursing program faculty members have been bringing lunch to area hospitals during the crisis. By ordering the food locally, they are helping Long Island's struggling restaurant owners, too.
Celebrate Adelphi while helping our juniors and seniors who face sudden financial problems stay on track toward earning their degree. Research: The Promise of Remote Monitoring
The pandemic has brought telemedicine into widespread acceptance. Remote monitoring of patients through wearable devices could be the next step, but healthcare providers will first need to be trained to take advantage of the technology. A. Hasan Sapci, MD, assistant professor in the College of Nursing and Public Health, conducted a study showing how that training might work. Read about it in “ The Future of Medicine Is Digital ,” a feature article in our Fall 2019  Academic and Creative Research Magazine .
Alumni Making a Difference
The Women’s Giving Circle
This month, I’d like to thank Adelphi’s wonderful Women’s Giving Circle for their $25,000 donation to the Student Emergency Fund and their other charitable work during the pandemic. Led by Chelsea Wollman '14 and composed of alumni as well as current students and friends of the University, the Circle provides assistance to Adelphi students and the larger community year-round.
Dr. Riordan is an internationally known expert and frequent speaker on leadership, diversity and inclusion, and career success. She has published nearly 70 academic and business press articles and is authoring  Shift Happens: How to Adapt and Thrive in a Rapidly Changing World of Work —a book on helping employees adapt to the changing workplace. Dr. Riordan’s TEDx talk, “Dare to Be Extraordinary,” has received more than 20,000 views. She has been interviewed by and written articles for media such as the Financial Times , the Harvard Business Review , Forbes and HuffPost .
