Meet Four New Panthers—and the Programs That Drew Them to Adelphi
Dear Adelphi Family and Friends,
I am always intrigued to hear our students' reasons for choosing Adelphi. Some say they fell in love with our beautiful campus. Some appreciate the quick train ride to the excitement of New York City. But, most importantly, students come to Adelphi for one of our many outstanding academic programs that fits their lives, career goals and passions.
The four students I’m highlighting this month each came to Adelphi for a program and career path that truly inspired them:
-
Read why Matthew Brophy, the son of a 9/11 first responder, chose Adelphi’s Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology to launch a career in mental health.
-
See how our nursing program, recently ranked No. 3 in New York state by College Factual, was the ideal fit for transfer student Rejo Jose.
-
Meet Josephine Briones, a night shift nurse, who found the flexible schedule and career potential she needed in Adelphi Online’s MS in Healthcare Informatics program.
-
See how Solomon Claxton will use his degree in educational technology from Adelphi to enrich the lives of those in his island home nation.
Even during these difficult times, when the entire Adelphi community is navigating a global pandemic and its related disruptions and challenges, Adelphi upholds our commitment to life-changing academics.
All the best,

How Adelphi Launched a Safer Start to the School Year
On-campus learning has gotten off to a safe and healthy start at Adelphi, thanks to the way our community has adapted to the essential safety protocols put in place by our Restart Teams and shared in a series of helpful videos.

Working full time, while earning a new MS. Josephine Briones is a registered nurse who knows that technology and digital record keeping can be used to improve patient care. That's why she enrolled in Adelphi's online master's degree program in healthcare informatics.

To bring tech to island schools. Solomon "Clakkey" Claxton wants to help students on his island home of Saint Kitts and Nevis get a better education. To help make that happen, he came to Adelphi for our master's degree program in educational technology.

"If I can help just a few people." First-year student Matthew Brophy is a winner of a 9/11 Promise scholarship for children of first responders. Affected by a friend's suicide, he came to Adelphi for our top-tier psychology program.

With help from caring professors. Rejo Jose is a respiratory therapist who transferred to Adelphi last spring to earn a nursing degree. He soon found that our nursing program offers more than just top academics; it also has faculty members who go out of their way to help students.

Sharing Our Faculty’s Latest Research on the Lifelong Journey of Wellness
|
Research plays a vital role at our University. This year, Adelphi's Academic and Creative Research Magazine focuses on insights around health and wellness, with a cover story that challenges long-standing assumptions about growing older. Read about it in "Rethinking Theories on Aging." My deepest thanks to our researchers for their fascinating and transformative scholarly work.

Alumni Who Made a Difference:
Dennis McDonagh ’78
Lindsey Kupferman Levine, MA ’02, PhD ’06
|
|
Many generous friends and family help make Adelphi's mission possible, but this month, I want to highlight two alumni who have recently made an amazing difference in the lives of our students. Their recent gifts, totaling more than $500,000 combined, will help our students during this uniquely challenging time. Current member of our board of trustees Dennis McDonagh '78 and his family created an Immediate Impact Scholarship which has already provided urgently needed aid to more than 41 undergraduates in unexpected financial difficulty due to the pandemic. Trustee Emerita Lindsey Kupferman Levine, MA '02, PhD '06, and her family have endowed a scholarship for students going into the mental health profession, with preference given to graduate students. I am deeply grateful to Dennis, Lindsey and their families for their tremendous generosity and loyalty to Adelphi, and I thank all our alumni who continue to find ways to help support present and future Panthers.
