Finding a Future in Tech—at Adelphi

Tech is becoming a critical part of every student's higher education—and Adelphi is helping our Panthers keep pace. Over recent years at Adelphi, we have launched an innovative partnership with Brookhaven National Labs and new programs in cybersecurity, software engineering and scientific computing. We’ve also established STEM-designated degrees in our Robert B. Willumstad School of Business.

Especially worth noting, tech at Adelphi played a critical role in sustaining our mission during the pandemic. We moved more than 1,000 courses online in Spring 2020, are offering virtual internships and hosting online events, clubs and collaborations, and we even celebrated our annual three-day Spirit Weekend together in Zoom rooms. This fall, tech continues to play a tremendous role in our safe return to campus—with many of our students learning in hybrid environments. Tech is even helping our students in the arts: A recent virtual performance by our Department of Theatre students listed a new backstage credential: virtual background designer. Theatre design/technology student Chloe Yoo created the sets from her home in South Korea. Astounding!

Going for gold as an esports star. Senior business major George Adamou is one of the world’s top-ranked players of the FIFA soccer video games. He’s already earning money doing it, and now he’s considering esports as a career.

A grad degree for a student who digs data. In his first job after graduating from Adelphi, Jaime Dasso ’18 discovered a passion for the way data helps businesses make better decisions. Now he’s returned to Adelphi to pursue a master’s degree in our new graduate program in business analytics.

Demystifying Cryptocurrency |
Bitcoin and other digital currencies have been in circulation since the financial crisis of 2008, but they retain an air of mystery and a whiff of disrepute. Mark B. Grabowski, JD, associate professor of communications, set out to clear up misconceptions about the currencies and explain their underlying technology in Cryptocurrencies: A Primer on Digital Money, cited as one of 2019’s best books on money. Read about it in “Taking the ‘Cryptic’ Out of Cryptocurrency,” a feature article in our Fall 2020 Academic and Creative Research Magazine.

This month, I am pleased to honor an alumna who spent a lifetime supporting Adelphi, our nursing program and our nursing students. Betty Forest, who passed away in August 2019, left an extraordinary planned gift to the University, one that includes $4.7 million for nursing scholarships, an innovation fund and an endowment for the deanship of the College of Nursing and Public Health. On behalf of everyone at Adelphi, I express my deepest gratitude for Dr. Forest’s generosity and loyalty. |

Standing strong in a pandemic: At a time when the financial outlook for many colleges and universities has suffered due to the pandemic, careful planning has kept Adelphi on firm footing. Standard & Poor’s recognized this in October when it reaffirmed the University’s bond rating of A- with a stable outlook. We will continue to monitor expenses while working with students and their families who are facing financial challenges.

Dr. Riordan is an internationally known expert and frequent speaker on leadership, diversity and inclusion, and career success. She has published nearly 70 academic and business press articles and is authoring Shift Happens: How to Adapt and Thrive in a Rapidly Changing World of Work—a book on helping employees adapt to the changing workplace. Dr. Riordan’s TEDx talk, “Dare to Be Extraordinary,” has received more than 20,000 views.
