Bright futures: Spotlight on career guidance at Adelphi

Adelphi University’s commitment to launching meaningful careers is a hallmark of our curriculum and the hands-on opportunities our students can access. It is also the primary mission of our Center for Career and Professional Development .

With innovative approaches and a dedicated team behind it, the center helps set students of all backgrounds, ages and career paths toward successful futures—and is winning national recognition while doing it. This month, I am thrilled to share some stories with you about how the Center for Career and Professional Development is helping us to truly transform lives here at Adelphi.

A vital part of the career learning opportunities that Adelphi students enjoy is our community partnerships. Through them, students can earn world-class internships in healthcare, education, business, government and local nonprofits, or volunteer in many ways that benefit our greater communities. In fact, Adelphi just earned the prestigious Carnegie Community Engagement Classification once again, thanks to our hallmark community engagement.

I invite you to read more about our students and how they are getting ready for outstanding futures:

Whether it's interning, volunteering or working, our students benefit profoundly from real-world learning, valuable networking and award-winning career preparation.
All the best,
Christine M. Riordan, PhD
President
"A Day at the Office"
See how the job shadowing program at Adelphi's Robert B. Willumstad School of Business gives students a better idea of what they would—and wouldn't—want to do for their careers.
How to make students career-ready. Adelphi's career-prep program is regarded as one of the nation's best. What makes it so successful?
A seminar that helps students land internships. The rigorous Internship Preparation Seminar helps students like Jenisa Caban '18 build the skills they need to land coveted placements.
Tips for career-building opportunities on and off campus. Jessica Colonna and other Adelphi students are beefing up their résumés through on-campus jobs and Adelphi internship programs.
Lessons in leadership help launch careers. Adelphi students like Jaggar fellow Samuel Ajewole pick up valuable professional skills through the Jaggar Community Fellows and Leadership Certificate programs. Here are two students' stories.
Research: Women entrepreneurs who are beating the odds in a traditional patriarchal society
Many women in traditional patriarchal societies are launching successful business careers. How do they do that? To find out, assistant professor of management Murat Sakir Erogul, PhD, interviewed women in the United Arab Emirates who had started businesses. See what he learned in "Women Entrepreneurs in the UAE," a feature in our 2019 Academic and Creative Research Magazine .
A hot start for women’s basketball
Ranked No. 10 this week, Adelphi's women's basketball team has gotten off to its second-best start ever, with a current overall record of 20-2. New records have been set in the pool and on the field, featuring a best-ever performance from grad student Angelo Fradelakis in the weight throw.

We're also preparing our athletes for success  after  graduation. We're hosting career-prep events like résumé-building workshops, informational meetings with corporate sponsors and our annual Student-Athlete Mentoring Night in March—all made possible by help from generous donors.
Alumni making a difference: Doug Flynn ’89
A financial planner and contributor to five best-selling personal finance books, Doug Flynn recently teamed with Richard J. Zito, his partner and co-founder of Flynn Zito Capital Management, LLC, to establish the Flynn Zito Capital Management Scholarship Fund for finance students. Flynn, featured in the " A Day at the Office " video, also appears frequently in the national media as a source of expert financial advice. Many thanks to him for the ways he is helping our business students.
Momentum Tour 2019–2020
The Momentum Tour heads to California this month for get-togethers in Los Angeles and San Francisco , so I'm looking forward to an excellent turnout from Panthers who have gone west since graduation. As you can see in this photo, we had a great gathering last month in Naples, Florida. Our hosts, Pablo Pick ’65 and Karol Bolin Pick ’66, are helping me hold up the Adelphi flag.
