Dear Adelphi Friends and Family,
A happy and healthy New Year to you!
For my first newsletter of 2021, I share with you some ways that Adelphi students stayed engaged with our greater community, despite the global pandemic that dominated and altered our lives in 2020. At the U.N., in the U.S. financial markets, in business and in the COVID-19 unit of a local hospital and more, our students had experiences that enriched everything that their textbooks, lessons and lectures offer. This is because community engagement is in Adelphi’s DNA.
Our University is one of the 119 U.S. colleges and universities to receive the 2020 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. For 125 years, we have asked our students to be “part of a bigger picture,” to quote Adelphi student Saira Amar, who is featured below.
As we look to a brighter 2021, I hope you enjoy seeing how our students are a part of our ever-changing world!

A nursing student's dedication to volunteering. Senior nursing major Kassie Vetrano volunteered at a hospital at the start of the pandemic to work with COVID-19-positive patients. After contracting the virus herself, she returned to her job once she recovered, determined to inspire patients as they battled the disease.

Investing in the market for Adelphi and for credit, remotely. With our James Riley, Jr. Trading Room closed since last March, the finance course that allows business students to invest a portion of the University's endowment has gone virtual. Our students continued learning how to turn a profit during a volatile period.

Virtual internships: A new way to connect students with employers. While the pandemic has temporarily put an end to most on-site internships, Adelphi's Innovation Center is helping both enrolled students and those taking a gap year to get hands-on, résumé-ready career experience remotely.

Playing for an international audience. When the United Nations wanted to host a concert celebrating its 75th year and the 10th anniversary of its Academic Impact program, it chose the Adelphi Symphony Orchestra. Our students and alumni had the outstanding experience of playing before a global Zoom audience.

Research: The Many Approaches to Solving Problems |
When Salvatore J. Petrilli ’05, EdD, associate dean for academic operations and General Education, taught his honors seminar on mathematical problem solving, he divided his students into four groups, each tasked with creating tools to research different methods of solving problems. These 15 students gained more than new understanding—they co-authored an article that was ultimately published in a peer-reviewed academic journal. Read about it in “The Art of Problem Solving,” featured in our Fall 2020 Academic and Creative Research Magazine.

Ben Kenyon ’06 knows something about success. At Adelphi, he starred on our basketball team, and then headed to the NBA as a performance and strength coach for the Portland Trail Blazers. Starting this season, he’ll be with the Philadelphia 76ers. Ben also hosts a podcast devoted to inspiring growth, and is the author of A Kid's Book About Gratitude, which landed on Oprah Winfrey's list of favorite things for 2020. Adelphi and I are Panther proud of him!

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Adelphi: Across the University, Adelphi is actively working to create change. I invite readers to explore the most recent actions taken— including our first-ever Transgender Awareness Week—and review the progress made since 2015 in providing an environment where every student, faculty and staff member feels appreciated, respected and included.

Dr. Riordan is an internationally known expert and frequent speaker on leadership, diversity and inclusion, and career success. She has published nearly 70 academic and business press articles and is authoring Shift Happens: How to Adapt and Thrive in a Rapidly Changing World of Work—a book on helping employees adapt to the changing workplace.
