New Panthers, New Dreams, Same Great Spirit: Welcome, Class of 2023

How exceptional are our incoming students for the year ahead? Before I share some personal stories, I think these numbers also tell a great tale:

13,000 The most applications in the history of Adelphi
3.59 The average high school GPA of our Class of 2023. These Panthers are highly qualified and very motivated.
25 The number of U.S. states represented by the Class of 2023. For a school once known as regional, it is clear Adelphi’s prestige is spreading.
400+ Transfer students who joined our Adelphi family this year
850+ Our number of new graduate students attending Adelphi programs this Fall 2019 semester
54% The number of first-year students who identify as diverse, making this class one of the most diverse in our 123-year history

Every one of our students has a unique story. Here are some I’d like to personally share with you this month:

Please join me in welcoming all our new and returning Panthers to Adelphi!

All the best,
Christine M. Riordan, PhD
President
A new way to help prepare students for college

Adelphi holds Orientation for first-year students every summer, but this year the University added a new opportunity: small group meetings between students and faculty members to talk about life in college—and to reinforce that students can always turn to faculty for advice and support.
Orientation 2019: Building a community, finding friends

Adelphi's three-day Orientation in July isn't just about getting first-year students prepared for college. It's also a chance to have fun and build strong connections with others.
A Marine Corps vet's new base of operations. Gabriel Buitrago won a combat medal in Afghanistan. Now he's at Adelphi getting an MBA focusing on supply chain management.
Reaching new heights. Janie Frazier, an artist and flight instructor, got her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Adelphi last spring. Now she's working on her MBA to prepare for her role in her family's quarry business.
An accelerated path for a student from China. Thea Liu wanted to go to college in the United States, but she needed language help and cultural support. She got both from Adelphi's International Accelerator program.
Arriving at Adelphi after the battle of his life. After two grueling bouts with cancer, first-year student and Presidential Scholar Kyle Dorr is settling in as a nursing student.
Looking for needed support, a student transfers to Adelphi. When the university she attended dropped its program for students with disabilities, Haley Sulahian transferred to Adelphi for the support she needs.
A journey to dental school and a future to smile about. Tasneem Shoubir hated going to the dentist as a child. Now she's entering the Honors College and starting Adelphi's seven-year joint program with NYU's School of Dentistry.
Research: Healing the shame of child sexual abuse
Tracy Stopler, an adjunct professor of nutrition, has devoted her life to helping those, like herself, who were sexually abused as children. It's a subject she wrote about in The Ropes That Bind, a novel based on her childhood experience and her struggle to overcome the shame it caused her. Read about it in "Breaking Free, " a feature article in our Academic and Creative Research Magazine .
Panthers set for strong seasons
Our fall sports teams return to action this month with high hopes, especially after the release of the NE10 preseason coaches' polls. Two of our five programs, volleyball and men's soccer, sit atop their respective polls. Women's tennis, women's soccer and field hockey were voted second, fourth and seventh, respectively, by Northeast-10 Conference coaches. Each team found time during Welcome Weekend to lend a hand helping first-year students move in. The teams will open their Fall 2019 campaigns after Labor Day. A complete season schedule can be found on our com posite calen dar .
Alumni making a difference: Omar Grant ’03
You can add Omar Grant '03 to the list of Adelphi alumni who are making their mark in hip-hop music. Grant was just named co-president of the Roc Nation record label , part of the hugely influential entertainment company founded by the rapper Jay-Z. Grant was on Adelphi's annual 10 Under 10 list in 2012, recognized as one of a group of alumni who had achieved notable success before their 10th Adelphi reunion.
Momentum Tour 2019–2020
The 2019–2020 Momentum Tour comes to Oyster Bay, Long Island , on Thursday, September 26, and our alumni, friends, students and families can also share in these upcoming events: Professor Lee Stemkoski, PhD, will deliver a Gallery Talk about the science behind the art at the Nassau County Museum of Art on September 21. And on September 24, Tara Westover will be at the Performing Arts Center to discuss her book Educated: A Memoir , which was chosen for this year's Adelphi Community Reads program for first-year students.
