Myth #2: Need Doesn’t Always Look the Same

"People who appear well-off can't be struggling"

There’s a common myth that people driving nice cars, wearing designer clothes, or having manicured nails couldn’t possibly need support. This misconception can prevent us from recognizing the struggles that many face, often hidden behind a polished exterior.

Meet Ashley*, a 38-year-old woman who once seemed to have it all. With a successful career, a stylish wardrobe, and a luxury car, she appeared confident and thriving. But, after losing her job during a company layoff, her world unraveled.

As the weeks turned into months without work, Ashley’s unemployment benefits barely covered the cost of her apartment. Each day, she faced the harsh reality of her dwindling resources and growing anxiety about her future. Ashamed and overwhelmed, Ashley found herself trapped in silence, too embarrassed to reach out for help. She felt like a failure for needing assistance, a far cry from the confident woman she once was.

In a moment of desperation, Ashley walked into the Food Hub. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, but she felt out of place and vulnerable in her time of need. “I never would have thought I needed help like this before. Thank you for helping me,” she said to a client care volunteer, her voice breaking with a mix of relief and sorrow.

The Reality Behind the Myth: Ashley’s story illustrates that need can look different for everyone. Here are some important points to consider:

  • The pressure to maintain appearances for professional and social connections often forces vulnerable neighbors to mask their struggles behind a brave smile.
  • Although she drives a nice car, it’s a financial burden that she can barely manage, a remnant of a time when her future seemed secure.
  • At one time financially stable, she faced sudden life changes that wiped out her savings, leaving her in a precarious position.

Research shows that 40% of Americans are just one crisis away from poverty. At the Food Hub, we understand that anyone from any background can experience hard times. That’s why we’re here to support our neighbors with compassion and dignity—no matter their situation. Together, we can break down these poverty myths and extend empathy and help to all who need it.

Collaborative Efforts Provide Critical Support

After Homeless Encampment Cleared

The Food Hub was privileged to play a role in supporting individuals displaced when a homeless encampment near Lincoln Highway East was cleared. Outreach teams helped transport them, safeguard their belongings, and coordinated with Refresh Lancaster to provide showers and a change of clothes.

Through the combined efforts of the Food Hub team, Tenfold, Blueprints For Addiction Recovery, and the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition, temporary housing and much-needed care were offered during a time of great uncertainty. Deep gratitude goes to One United Lancaster for sharing this story and shedding light on the struggles of those affected by this sudden displacement.
