Black History Month is inspiring creative connections in SA's art classes! Third grade students are making self-portraits in the style of Kehinde Wiley, a contemporary portrait painter based in New York City who is known for his naturalistic paintings of Black people that reference the work of Old Master (painters of skill who worked in Europe before about 1800) paintings.

Learning and Community Highlights

Stewardship as Central to the SA Mission

Stewardship is a cornerstone of the SA mission and a key ingredient in SA’s approach to preparing passionate leaders. Middle school advisory students recently prepped, cooked, served, and cleaned up from breakfasts at Rowan Helping Ministries, one this week and one several weeks ago.

Upper School Environmental Science Students Make Connections Outside the Classroom

As part of their study of environmental science and the layering of topics in science and sustainability, SA Upper School students visited Main Street Market this week to learn about sustainable practices in agriculture. Next week, students will work with a soil scientist and then visit an agricultural research campus to apply their learning.

Third Grade Roman Architecture Study

Third grade students have been immersed in the history of Ancient Rome and are learning about Rome's most notable structures and architecture that left a footprint in history! As part of their study, students chose a desired piece of architecture, researched and wrote facts, and built a model. Pictured here, students presented their creations and findings to their classmates and teachers!

3K Students Open Classroom Post Office

3K students are learning about the post office and the U.S. Postal Service, and for the month of February have set up a post office in their dramatic play area. Students have been practicing cutting with scissors and writing their names while making letters for their families. After students finish a letter, they choose an envelope, place a stamp on it, and mail the letter in the classroom mailbox. 3K students have loved this hands-on learning experience!
