Third grade students took their study of animal classification, vertebrates and invertebrates, and cold- and warm-blooded animals to the North Carolina Zoo! Back at SA, students dissected owl pellets and are researching and preparing presentations on animals to share with the class.

Phonics Carnival in Second Grade

Welcome to the phonics carnival! Second grade celebrated their skillfulness in phonics in a morning of games and fun while reviewing concepts learned so far this year. Rotating through phonics-themed carnival stations, students practiced their open and closed syllables with long and short vowels, blends and digraphs, sight words, LE and Y endings, and R-controlled vowels.

First and Eighth Grade Buddies Uplift SA's Monthly Virtue of Gratitude

We are thankful! November's core virtue for grades 3K-8 is gratitude, and this month has been a super opportunity to express the many things we are grateful for. For first and eighth grade buddies, friendship is a top item on the list! Celebrating this special connection, buddies came together for a gratitude scavenger hunt around campus.

Fifth Grade Study of Biodiversity

As part of a pilot program of Catawba College's Understory Project for SA's students in grades 1-8, fifth grade students are delving deeply into invertebrates and the biodiversity of organisms on school grounds! Students have investigated animal adaptations, the interdependence of plants and animals, and the impact of weather and climate on different types of habitats. Most recently, fifth grade created insect models and presented on insect feeding relationships, predators, and adaptations!

Hablemos español! Let's speak Spanish!

Upper School's Spanish 1 class is designed around the four core skills of speaking, reading, writing, and interpersonal communication. Speaking Spanish is a key skill, but just as important are the skills of listening and understanding. More and more frequently over the course of the class, students are engaging in immersion days in which only Spanish is spoken.
