NPAAMB: Student Incentive Success Initiative

As some of you may know, NPAAMB has recently revamped their Student Incentive Success Initiative (SISI - previously called Stay in School Initiative) for local Indigenous high school students! 

 

If self-identifying Indigenous youth in Hamilton high schools sign up as a NPAAMB client and submit their transcript as proof of their earned credits, they can earn funds for completing each year of high school! (As long as application is made for the fund within the same fiscal year that they finished the grade)

 

Grade 9 (8 credits earned): $200

Grade 10 (16 credits earned): $400

Grade 11 (24 credits earned): $600

Grade 12/Graduation (30 credits): $750

Grade 12/Graduation (32 credits): $800 

Hill Park Learning Centre Courses

Hill Park Learning Centre is accepting registrations for the Food Safety Training - Food Handler Certification Course and G1 Drivers Literacy Prep Course. Limited spots are available. 


  • Are you passionate about food? Looking for employment in the food service industry or want to provide safe food in your home? Learn the basic principles of handling food in a safe manner with our FREE Food Safety Training - Food Handler Certification Course.

  • Are you interested in acquiring your G1 Drivers Licence? Our FREE G1 Drivers Literacy Prep Course provides the practical knowledge to identify traffic signs, rules of the road, and safe driving practices required to successfully write the Ontario Class G1 drivers licence test.


  ELIGIBILITY:

  • Must be able to attend the course independently without the aid of a support worker
  • Participants are required to be 19 years of age or older (we can accept a small percentage of 18-year-old participants provided they are not attending high school)
  • Resident of Ontario
  • Have less than Grade 12 education OR
  • Be assessed as having reading, writing, or math skills below OALCF level 3 
  • OR
  • Participants who are newcomers to Canada require a Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5 or 6 in Reading/Writing/Speaking/Listening (some Level 7's accepted)

All participants must pre-register prior to start date. This will involve completing online or in-person registration forms and an assessment to confirm suitability (nothing scary). We offer assistance during this process.

 

Meaningful discussion is a hallmark of the Cornerstone Program. Everyone has a voice. We pride ourselves in providing an atmosphere of inclusion and strive to maintain a positive culture. Our courses typically attract an eclectic mix of people. It will be common to have newcomers, persons with disabilities, youth, and older learners within the same class. As such, we require all potential learners to be open-minded, and thoughtful towards others in the classroom.

How to Help Refugees — and Your Company — by Hiring from This Overlooked Talent Pool

A professor from Afghanistan who speaks multiple languages. A highly experienced doctor who fled her home in Syria. A student from the Democratic Republic of Congo whose education was interrupted by conflict and who is eager to increase his skill set. 


This is just a small sampling of the talent pool in the refugee population. “We now have more than 27 million refugees around the world, people who have left their home country due to war, violence, conflicts, or persecution,” said Lisa GunnarsonLinkedIn’s Stockholm-based manager of Nordic countries, who moderated a LinkedIn Live event focused on hiring refugees earlier this year. 


The idea behind the event? Millions of people have landed on foreign soil after being displaced and many are looking for work. Lisa added that this number is expected to increase, due to growing environmental crises around the world.

Breaks at work boost job performance and well-being, SFU study finds

Taking breaks from work not only boost workers' well-being, but it also increases their performance while on the job, according to new research out of Simon Fraser University (SFU).


In a review of 83 studies, all but one of which were peer reviewed, researchers found that breaks of 10 minutes or more can decrease stress and fatigue — two things that hinder workplace productivity.


Zhanna Lyubykh, lead author on the review and assistant professor of management and organization studies at SFU said there's not necessarily a particular type of break that makes people more or less effective at work — it's all about how much the individual enjoys the break. 


Having a snack, taking a quick nap, going for a walk or chatting with coworkers about anything other than work are some ways people recharge during the work day.
