MEET ARCHIE:

PROOF THAT LOVE'S NEW BEGINNINGS HAVE NO AGE LIMIT

When Mitchell Heller (now known for his famous cheesecake donations!) met a senior beagle at Heartland named Tenny Jr., it wasn’t just a visit—it was the start of something extraordinary.

Tenny, now affectionately known as Archie, arrived at Heartland from Chicago Animal Care and Control, battling severe pneumonia. While he healed under the watchful eyes of our veterinary team, Mitchell stopped by often—bringing treats, love, and of course, cheesecake.

Once Archie was strong enough, Mitchell officially adopted him, and the two have been inseparable ever since—two seniors living out their golden years together, proving that love and healing truly have no expiration date.

Stories like Mitchell and Archie’s are made possible by the generosity of donors, whose support allows Heartland to waive adoption fees for senior adopters and ensure every older animal receives the care they need to live comfortably.

Our Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program brings together two groups who need each other most: senior companion animals often overlooked in shelters and senior adults seeking comfort and company.

We see these older dogs and cats for who they truly are—gentle souls with so much love left to give. Through this special program, we ensure they receive the extra care they deserve before finding a loving home.

The real magic is in the matching. Our counselors take the time to understand each senior adopter’s lifestyle and needs, then carefully pair them with a senior dog or cat whose personality aligns perfectly.

You can help make more happy connections for seniors like Archie and Mitchell.

Heartland's Loved for Life Program

Heartland Animal Shelter’s support for animals doesn’t end at adoption. Our Loved for Life Program offers peace of mind to companion-animal parents who want to ensure their beloved pets are safe and cared for in the event of their serious illness or death.

By designating Heartland Animal Shelter as the future caregiver for their animal, owners agree to leave a portion of their estate to the shelter. This not only supports their pet’s future transition, but also ensures Heartland can continue helping homeless animals for generations to come.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT: SENIOR EDITION

Meet Lola Dove

Our Golden Bachelorette

Lola Dove is seven-year-old Golden Doodle whose quiet strength and gentle spirit shine through more each day. After arriving at Heartland from a Wisconsin puppy mill, she’s steadily gaining confidence and learning to enjoy the comforts of home life. In her foster home, Lola has shown herself to be calm, affectionate, and easy to live with. She’s fully housebroken, polite when left alone, and coexists beautifully with both dogs and cats. Lola loves soft beds, familiar routines, and the reassuring presence of kind people. She’s ready to continue her journey with a patient adopter who will give her the security and care she deserves.

Meet Allie

Our Senior Sweetheart

Allie is a beautiful 13-year-old long-haired senior cat with deep, soulful eyes and a calm, observant nature. After being left behind in an apartment, Allie found her way to Heartland. She’s now spending her days in Cat Room 4, quietly getting to know her new surroundings. Allie has an easy kind of sweetness that makes you want to sit beside her for a moment longer. She is front-declawed and carries herself with grace. She’s ready to find a peaceful home where her tender spirit can truly shine. With Heartland’s care behind her, Allie is beginning her next chapter — one where peace, trust, and love finally feel like home.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: TOM BOHN

At Heartland, we know that our mission is only possible thanks to the tireless dedication of our incredible volunteers. Every single one brings passion and energy that truly make a difference in our community, and we love to share their stories!

How long have you been volunteering with Heartland?

“18+ years.”

Tom has been a consistent and foundational part of the Heartland family for nearly two decades, embodying the long-term commitment that anchors the shelter's operations. His favorite phrase is that he has been here longer than the trees

What is your volunteer role at Heartland?

“Laundry, Board Treasurer, ‘puppy guy.’”

Tom’s roles are many, ranging from the hands-on care of making sure every animal has clean bedding, to providing strategic financial oversight as the Board Treasurer, and specializing in the health, behavior, and socialization of our youngest dogs as the 'puppy guy’.

What is the most memorable moment you’ve experienced while volunteering with Heartland?

“Moving into our own building.”

This event marked a major milestone for the organization, providing a permanent, purpose-built facility where Heartland could expand its capacity to save and care for more animals in need. Tom played a strategic leadership role as a board member in making this possible for Heartland.

If you could describe the feeling of volunteering for Heartland in one word, what would it be and why?

“Satisfaction of helping homeless animals.”

Tom’s deep sense of fulfillment comes from knowing that his efforts directly translate into safe shelter, medical care, and a brighter future for dogs and cats who had nowhere else to go.

If you were welcoming a brand-new volunteer to Heartland, what is the single most important piece of advice you would give them?

“Pay attention and learn the process.”

Understanding how we do things ensures that every dog and cat gets the consistent, safe, and loving care they deserve, making your help as effective as possible!

What is one thing that you do outside of volunteering — a hobby, a passion, or a secret talent — that most people at Heartland don’t know about?

“Dog obedience training.”

His outside passion complements his 'puppy guy' role, giving him an invaluable understanding of canine behavior and the patience needed to help animals become their best selves for adoption.
