Adoptions First-Come, First-Served Once Again!
|
|
Beginning Wednesday, June 2, Kitsap Humane Society has transitioned to a walk-up and queue-based first-come, first-served adoption system. We will no longer be operating on an appointment-only system!
In March 2020, KHS converted to an appointment-based adoption process to ensure the well-being of shelter staff, volunteers, and community members due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the duration of 2020 and into 2021, KHS followed local and state pandemic guidance and remained open safely, serving the community as an essential service.
As more and more individuals are vaccinated, the queue-based, first-come, first-served adoption process will allow increased opportunities for prospective adopters to welcome a new furry family member into their homes.

Cancelled: Kitsap Wine Festival

Given the ever-changing environment surrounding COVID-19, Kitsap Humane Society has made the difficult decision to not partner with Kitsap Conference Center as the co-hosts for this year’s Kitsap Wine Festival. However, we hope you’ll join us for our exciting new event, Wine & Whiskers, this August!

Happy National Foster a Pet Month!
|
|
KHS is celebrating National Foster a Pet Month with Petco Love and BOBS from Skechers by encouraging our community members to join in this lifesaving work and recognizing paw-some foster volunteers in Kitsap County, like Michelle Dell!
Since joining our foster network, Michelle and her family have made all the difference to 11 dogs, but especially one pup named Bran. Bran came to KHS at the end of 2020 in rough shape. Requiring multiple, intensive ear surgeries, Michelle and her family supported Bran through it all, taking him to and from surgery, administering his medicine, changing his bandages, and ensuring he healed up perfectly!
Since renamed Brando, Michelle fell in love with the Bullmastiff and made him a permanent member of her family. Brando, Michelle, and her family have continued to contribute by fostering dogs in need!
“Simply put, we couldn’t do what we do without our lifesaving network of foster volunteers," shared Lee Harper, Kitsap Humane Society’s Executive Director. "Over this last year especially, we’ve seen the tremendous role foster care plays in improving the lives of our shelter pets as more folks found themselves with time at home to get involved.”

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Kelsey Patterson!
|
In 2016 Kelsey adopted her cat, Leo. This little kitty had been cared for by a foster family, which sparked Kelsey's interest in fostering as she began to learn more about what that really meant. Soon, she knew that she wanted to become a foster parent too.
When Kelsey bought her first home in 2019, she created a kitten room in one of her spare bedrooms and enrolled in the KHS foster orientation. In September of that year, she took home her very first litter of foster kittens!
Since September of 2019, Kelsey has fostered almost 50 kittens! As we head into the 2021 kitten season, we know that number will keep growing.
Kelsey is such an asset to the foster team and takes in kittens of varying ages and conditions, including moms with neonatal kittens, kittens who aren’t fully weaned, kittens with ringworm, kittens with tummy issues, kittens with colds, and kittens with other medical conditions. If there is a kitten in need, Kelsey is always there. She truly offers a safe haven to kittens who need a little extra TLC.
|
|
"Not only is the level of care Kelsey provides to her fosters unmatched, but so is the kindness and warmth she offers to everyone," said Holly Faccenda, KHS Foster Care Coordinator. "Fostering can be challenging. Even on the hardest days, Kelsey remains positive, hopeful, and willing to do whatever it takes for her fosters."
We love you, Kelsey!

Staff Spotlight
Meet Michele Zarb!
|
This month, we’re most excited to introduce you to our Customer Service Manager, Michele Zarb! Michele started at KHS back in 2010 as a volunteer dog walker before joining our staff in 2013.
While she has many different responsibilities (and does them all wonderfully), Michele’s main focus is ensuring that every community member has the best possible experience in their interactions with KHS.
Her favorite part? “I love helping both pets, and people have access to the resources and tools they need to stay together forever.”
Her supervisor Samantha shared, "Michele is a compassionate and dedicated member of the KHS team. She always goes above and beyond to help pets in our shelter and pet parents in the community."
Like many of our other staff members, Michele often brings work home with her, and at one time, she had 21 foster parakeets in her spare bedroom!
|
|
Michele currently has three Chihuahuas and six finches, all KHS alum! She shared, “My first adoption from KHS was a horse, so it seems I’ve downsized since then!”
We’re so grateful to have your smiling face and caring personality on our team, Michele! Thank you for all you do.

Puppuccino Pal Spotlight
Cafe Corvo
|
|
We’d like to introduce our first-ever Puppuccino Pal Sponsor, Cafe Corvo!
Cafe Corvo is a quaint coffee shop that offers good coffee, kindness, and a community feel.
With that spirit in mind, Cafe Corvo keeps things local by carrying regional coffees and most of their vendors - including bakers, roasters, t-shirt printers, and mug makers - are within a 25-mile radius. In addition, their doors are open to people of all backgrounds. Cafe Corvo is committed to inclusion across race, sex, age, ability, religion, orientation, identity, and experience. Everyone is welcome at Cafe Corvo!
True to their community drive, Cafe Corvo chose to become a Puppuccino Pal Sponsor to help the people and pets in our community. “Animal rescue, protection, and adoption are near and dear to our hearts,” said Miranda Pinero, owner of Cafe Corvo. “We love, love, love the invaluable work that KHS does, and want to help in any small way that we can.”
“As we all move out of this weird, challenging pandemic time we want to be a gathering spot for Bremertonians to step back into the world and see their neighbors, have coffee dates, bring their babies and dogs and bikes for a day out in the neighborhood, and to reconnect with what it means to be part of a community," said Pinero.
Check out Cafe Corvo located at 629 N Callow Ave, Bremerton, WA 98312.
