First Pres Family,

Tonight we begin an important conversation. Our nation and world continue to grapple with systemic racism. In light of the recent vandalism at Hope Presbyterian Church, this conversation is especially timely. As I’ve said before, racism is anti-Christian. We can be a great church, filled with good Christians, but still be part of a culture tainted by structural racism. Followers of Jesus must be willing to be made uncomfortable by the gospel as we remain committed to the struggle for racial justice and reconciliation.

One thing we can do is further educate ourselves by looking to our own Christian theology. The life of the mind is not only part of our Presbyterian heritage, but it’s part of how we grow in our discipleship. Tonight we are fortunate to be joined by Dr. Vincent Bacote, Professor of Theology and Director of the Center for Applied Christian Ethics at Wheaton College. Over the next four weeks on Wednesday nights, Dr. Bacote will help us explore how our central beliefs lead us toward a love of God and neighbor, particularly on the lingering questions of race.

The class will be held over Zoom to allow for questions and conversation. Parents and students are encouraged to participate as well. Tonight’s class begins at 7:00 p.m. and you can log on to Zoom here

Pastor Kellen

P.S. The Wednesday night Matthew Bible Study will pause for now and resume at a later date.
September Sermon Series
A New Normal: Finding New Rhythms of Life
Sundays, September 13-27
8:30 a.m. Outdoor Worship; 10:00 a.m. Livestream Worship

In this three-week series, Pastor Kellen reminds us that God is with us in the disorienting, culture-shifting situations we find ourselves in, whether because of a global pandemic, a new life stage by choice, or a sudden change by chance. Despite the obvious challenges, how do we find new rhythms in our spiritual lives? We will encounter Old Testament prophets and personalities and see how their stories relate to ours. In less familiar books of the Bible, we will recall familiar and life-shaping biblical truths.
