Proclamation of Adult Education Week

Adult education provides so much more than just the high school equivalency; it is certainly a milestone for adult learners who have to have grit and determination. They are seeking a better future for themselves and their families!

During the Fall Administrators' Meeting, Governor Asa Hutchinson reflected their hard work as well as the work of adult education professionals who show up everyday to empower their learners.

Therefore, Governor Hutchinson proclaimed September 18 – 24, 2022 as Adult Education Week in the State of Arkansas.

The funding, support and visibility that Governor Hutchinson brings to adult education programs in Arkansas is absolutely critical to ensure that the programs can serve adult students in a high-quality manner.

AACAE Conference 2022 Update

The Arkansas Association of Continuing and Adult Education (AACAE) and Adult Learning Alliance (ALA) are excited to announce Karen Walker as keynote speaker for the upcoming 2022 conference Thursday, October 27th to Friday, October 28th. A pre-conference will be held on Wednesday, October 26th.

Karen Walker serves as the Community Education Manager for Arkansas PBS and has over 20 years of experience in designing and leading interactive education camps and workshops for adults and children. In the past 16 years, Karen has created many new partnerships while strengthening existing partners in areas of early learning (formal and informal), K-12 educational activities, and adult education. She has led many national, regional, and local initiatives that focused not only on educational activities, but also on addressing the needs of the community through social support partnerships throughout the state. She serves as an on-camera and event spokesperson for Arkansas PBS.

The pre-conference covers these two topics: Trauma Training and Customer Service Training.Trauma Training will focus on trauma-informed care, survival skills and literacy and trauma information strategies, while Customer Service Training will review effective verbal and non-verbal communication, professionalism, maintaining a positive attitude and phone and mail etiquette. All adult education staff members are invited to take advantage of these trainings.

Your AACAE committee is still accepting awards nomination for the following categories: Outstanding Paraprofessional, Outstanding Adult Education Teacher, Luther H. Black Award for Outstanding Administrator, Adult Education Supporter, Retirees during the program year 2021-22. The board requests that those be submitted as soon as possible.

This year will mark our first in-person conference in two years, and our first in Little Rock in recent memory. The AACAE and ALA Conference promises valuable and current professional development for adult education and literacy staff from all corners of the state.

How to cancel your registration:

Participants must cancel a registration prior to the date of a scheduled training in escWorks Shoebox, to avoid having their name placed on a no-show list that may be reported to their director. To cancel a workshop registration:

1) Login to escWorks

2) Click on Registration/Certificate (this will bring up everything you are registered for)

3) Find the workshop you wish to cancel and click “Cancel my Registration”

4) The system will ask you again if you want to cancel. You will then click “Cancel Registration”

5) You will receive an email from escWorks stating that you have successfully removed yourself from the class. (If you do not get an email, that means the system did not process your cancelation and you will need to repeat the steps).

Registrations may be canceled up to 3 days before the workshop begins. The cancellation option will not appear in escWorks after the 3-day deadline. If the registration is not cancelled timely, registrants will be coded as a ‘no-show,’ and their director will be notified.

COABE Applauds 2022 Legislative Champion from Arkansas, Senator Terry Rice

The prestigious “Legislative Champion Award'' was granted to Senator Terry Rice for distinguished leadership and support for adult education in Arkansas. Department of Education Focuses on

Disability Website Compliance

While providing new resources and taking new actions, the federal government is taking measures to ramp up compliance reviews. One hundred compliance reviews will focus on digital accessibility of state departments of education, libraries and vocational rehabilitation services and postsecondary institutions. The Office of Civil Rights, under the direction of the Educational Department will not only perform compliance reviews but also provide educators with a 20-part series of how-to videos to aid website accessibility and technological barriers.

Don't Update to Windows 11 on GED Computers

The Pearson Vue software that we use for GED testing will only run on Windows 10 computers. It's easy for someone to make the mistake of updating to Windows 11 accidently, so make sure that everyone in your office is aware of this and skips the update to Windows 11 on any GED computers running Pearson Vue software.

If it’s not been more than 10 days since you installed Windows 11, you can go to Settings>System>Recovery and choose “Go Back.” This will revert your computer to the Windows 10 version you had before installing Windows 11.

If you really want to make sure that no one updates the computers, you can use the trick below to make sure the computer cannot update to Windows 11. Be aware that using Regedit incorrectly can cause serious damage to your operating system.

ALA Developing Tutor Network

ALA partnered with a Clinton School of Public Service Practicum Team last year to conduct a survey to determine if there was interest from literacy council tutors and directors to develop a tutor network. The survey concluded interest in a tutor network and many ideas were shared on what that could look like. Key recommendations included a website, newsletter, training, and mentorship.

The ALA Board of Directors approved the next step towards making this happen, approving a budget for a tutor training director. This person will be tasked with developing the framework for the network, designing a relevant curriculum, and coordinating regional meetings and webinars. If you know of anyone who may be interested in a remote, part-time position (20 hours/week), with travel, have them send a cover letter and resume to info@arkansasliteracy.org by October 14.
