Additional Information about the Workshop:
The workshop focuses on helping parents understand concepts, rather than providing them with hard and fast “rules” that might not work for them. There are several “Stop and Think” breaks wherein parents plan how they will apply the concepts covered in the workshop to their unique situations.
Concepts covered in the workshop include:
o Strategies to decrease the stress and tension (“Emotional Heat”) that tends to occur in these families
o Normalizing the stress and excessive guilt that most parents carry
o Debunking the “Myth of the Perfect Parent”
o Addressing the importance of self –care
o Reducing the cycle of unhealthy minimizing and enabling that serves to maintain “Emotional Heat” in the family.
o Increasing parents’ understanding of their child or teen’s motivation for avoidant coping. Working to increase the parents’ empathy for the child’s predicament. Addressing the concept of “manipulation” and helping to contextualize it into a broader understanding of a CBT Treatment paradigm.
We help parents to identify different categories of behavior, and to design better strategies for dealing with them.
o Getting out of Power Struggles
o Prioritizing which behaviors should be addressed first.
o Principles of Reinforcement (such as rewards, costs, extinction, etc.) - How and when to apply these principles.
o “Start Behaviors” – target behaviors that parents would like to see their child do more of
o “Stop Behaviors” – target behaviors that parents would like to have their child do less of
o How to support the therapy that the child is currently receiving, including basic education on exposure and response prevention and behavioral activation. Identifies and aims to correct mistakes that parents often make in their attempts to support treatment.
