RISE Benchmarking Research

We are very pleased to announce that The RISE Association (Resource Initiative & Society for Education) has invited APH to participate in a Medicare Advantage Plan Benchmarking Analysis research project . RISE is deeply committed to education and best practice sharing across its members, and intends the research findings and recommendations to serve as a guide for areas of focus for continuous improvement.

This research will utilize Medicare Advantage plans’ HEDIS data sets (multi-year) to shed light on current state and predicted areas of risk and cost, as well as allow the participants to be benchmarked against each other and Milliman Medicare benchmarks. Healthcare data analytics experts from Advanced Plan for Health and RISE Board members will look for commonality as well as outliers across the data sets, will present findings as well as recommendations and best practices at the RISE Quality Summit in June.

If you’d like to learn more about the research, please reach out to us at marketing@mypoindexter.com . We are currently working with RISE to recruit RISE member plans to participate.
Poindexter Enhancements

In our late February Poindexter enhancement release, we added Milliman’s National Medicare Benchmarking into the system for our Medicare clients’ use. This will support our growing Medicare client base in comparing their data to Milliman’s well-managed, moderately managed and loosely managed plan benchmarks.

If you’re interested in seeing a refresher Poindexter online demo that highlights Poindexter enhancements added over the past several months, please reach out to us at marketing@mypoindexter.com to get that scheduled. We’re happy to show off the new features and functions we have released to better support your business needs.
Recap From The Road

Recap of APH’s Experience at the February HCAA 2018 Executive Summit

Rick Scheel, VP of National Sales for Advanced Plan for Health recently attended the Health Care Administrators Association’s (HCAA) 2018 Executive Summit , where the theme of the conference - “ Take Charge of Your Future: Invent It! ” - centered around the implications of technology and how to control costs while providing ideal services within the healthcare sector. A recurring and consistent event topic was runaway healthcare costs in medical and pharma, and innovations and best practices that are supporting relief and results.  Ernie Clevenger , President of CareHere and author of the weekly MyHealthGuide News for the Self-Funded Community e-newsletter was the conference emcee, keeping the energy flowing throughout the event.

There were over 400 attendees at the event, including leading healthcare executives in the third-party administrator and self-funded administration businesses who provided great insight into the perspectives and needs in the self-funded community. Below are some highlights Rick wanted to share with our readership.

The conference kicked off with a powerful presentation by Daniel Kraft, M.D. , “Where can technology Take Us?”  Dr. Kraft’s presentation was very well received as it focused on how quickly technology will become the driving force behind the evolution of healthcare, and ultimately determine the course of healthcare outcomes across the board. Dr. Kraft focused on the importance of technology evolving healthcare from the current, reactive model into a proactive “Predictalytics” value-based one to supplant an outdated volume-based healthcare system.

Another highlight was a very interesting discussion led by Lawrence Thompson , former chairman of SIIA and COO of HealthNow regarding Association Health Plans (AHPs), and the potential for them to become a reality given a pending rule the U.S. Department of Labor has proposed that would alter AHP regulation. An AHP is an organization of similar businesses who band together to form an association to self-fund their healthcare expenses. This could be by region, by industry or other similar groupings.

Estimates are that AHP’s and the pending legislation may bring another 2-3 million lives into the self-funded industry.
If you have any questions for Rick Scheel related to his experience and learnings at this conference, please feel free to reach out to us at (888) 600-7566 or marketing@mypoindexter.com .
Blog Insights
We authored a two-part February Heart Health Month blog series on Hypertension. The first post in the series is a business-facing overview of the new 2017 hypertension guidelines, and the second post includes a Consumer Guide to High Blood Pressure.

Here’s an excerpt:

“This total includes the cost of health care services, medications to treat high blood pressure, and missed days of work." In November of 2017 the American College of Cardiology / American Heart Association Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines published new hypertension clinical practice guidelines. These guidelines are more stringent than the standards in common contemporary practice.

The American Heart Association had this to say about the new guidelines: “High blood pressure redefined for first time in 14 years: 130 is the new high."

The more education and influence we can provide to those with high blood pressure, the better the chances they will make the right decisions and take the right actions to help to keep their readings low.

The team at APH is passionate about improving the health and well-being of as many healthcare consumers as possible, so in part 2 of our hypertension blog series we created consumer education language for our customers to use to share details on the risk of hypertension and preventative measures with their members and employees.
