Recap from the Road
APH’s Rick Scheel and Steve McBride attended the annual Southwest Benefits Association Conference in Galveston, TX May 22 – 24. Many of APH’s prospects and clients also attended, and were interested in learning more about the latest trends in benefits and how to better manage their health plans.
The Keynote speaker was Jeff Glasbrenner . Jeff lost his left leg in a tragic farming accident when he was a young boy. Incredibly, he did not allow his condition to stop him from becoming a world champion Paralympian, or from Climbing Mount Everest and completing 8 iron man competitions in 8 months. He is a shining example of what can be accomplished with dedication and determination. Pictured is our Rick Scheel with Jeff.

One of the standout presentations came from Trinity Metro - a regional transportation system that provides public transportation to meet the mobility needs in the Fort Worth, TX area. Michael Whitmarsh , Health and Wellness Manager for Trinity Metro presented, “A data driven approach to building a benefits strategy.” He shared the results of a very targeted approach to reducing overall healthcare spend using health analytics data as the driving force. Specific areas that were targeted included Emergency Room and Chronic Disease prevalence. Furthermore, Trinity Metro partnered with Premise Health to build an onsite clinic. Using these approaches, Trinity Metro was able to reduce Inpatient Admissions by 37% and achieve a $153 PMPM in savings!
Another popular presentation was delivered by Aetna, and it covered Genomics Based Medicine, also known as Precision Medicine. Precision Medicine aims to combine genetic, family, lifestyle and environmental factors – all of which are unique to the individual – for the purpose of enhancing disease screenings and diagnosis targeting. This approach will help to ensure that the right individual is given the proper treatment in the optimal setting at the optimal time.

Despite genetic testing becoming more widely available with advances in technology, Precision Medicine has several challenges to overcome if it’s end goal of improving health outcomes through Genomics is to be met. A few challenges they shared are: Increasing product on the market; Increase in consumer interest; Limited patient and provider genetic literacy; Lab issues; Health Plan readiness.

Next year’s SWBA event will be held in New Orleans.
