Office of Advancement & Alumni Association
Perfect Together!
From time to time, we receive questions, or expressions of confusion, about the roles of our two organizations. Here are some answers to those questions to set the record straight.

Q: Isn’t the Alumni Association part of Hudson Catholic High School?

A: Actually, no. Hudson Catholic and the Alumni Association are separately incorporated 501c3 non-profit organizations. The official name of the Alumni organization is Alumni Association Hudson Catholic High School, Inc. Contributions to either will earn you an IRS-qualified tax deduction. This set up is somewhat unusual in comparison to other high schools and colleges, where Alumni Relations tends to reside within Advancement.

Q: What is the main purpose of the Alumni Association?

A: The Constitution of the Alumni Association is instructive as regards its purpose and mission, separate and distinct from that of Hudson Catholic Regional High School. The Alumni Association is committed to preserving the ongoing mission of a LaSallian education, established by the Brothers of Christian Schools in 1964, at Hudson Catholic.

Q: How did this uncommon arrangement arise?

A: A little bit of history: In the early 1980s, before our school had given any thought to creating a development or advancement office, young alumni jumped into the void with the foresight to incorporate as a fiduciary and begin fundraising on behalf of the school -- an annual phonothon, a golf outing, reunions, and the Alumni Leadership Program. Activities such as these are typically the domain of a school’s Advancement function, so careful coordination is sometimes necessary so that the two organizations do not wind up competing or duplicating efforts.

Q: What do Advancement and the Alumni Association have in common?

A: You! Our beloved alumni and friends. Without you, neither organization could be successful. Both the school from which you graduated, and the Alumni Association that you became a member of upon graduation, have a vested interest in remaining in communication with you. The school needs your ongoing support, without which we would have a difficult time continuing operations and providing the top echelon education with which Hudson Catholic is synonymous. The Alumni Association is a social organization that seeks to build comaraderie among all graduates and fidelity to alma mater.

Q: As an alumnus or alumnae, why do I receive communications from Hudson Catholic and the Alumni Association?

A: Sometimes, you may receive communications that overlap, or follow each other closely into your inbox. We certainly try to coordinate on communications, but mainly on those of greater importance. Doing so for each one would not be an optimal use of time.

Q: What’s with the Building The Legacy email publication?

A: This is a publication by the Office of Advancement established in July 2020 as a way to enable our alumni and friends to stay connected with the school and among each other. After working our way through design variations and publication frequency, we've managed to settle on consistent branding and cadence for bi-weekly issuance. Everyone should feel free to suggest future topics or offer content for sharing with the readership.

Q: Where do I send my contribution?

A: To the Office of Advancement, which is set up within the school for the purpose of cultivating donations, conducting fundraising and friend-raising activities and events, and sourcing non-tuition revenue for the school. The Association is not in competition with the school in a fundraising sense, but does raise funds for its own operations, primarily through the annual alumni golf outing, which has been operating for 27 years. Most of the money raised from this event, as well as other funds given to the Association by donors, ultimately pass through to the school in the form of gifts that enable the school to meet unanticipated costs or to fund needed purchases that are outside the school’s operating budget. This is why the Alumni Association is often referred to as the school’s ‘Guardian Angels’.

Q: Why are there two golf outings?

A: Each organization offers an annual golf event for fundraising related to its operations. We try to avoid competition between the events among golfers and sponsors, but certainly welcome overlap if support is offered to both. On the calendar, the Annual Alumni Outing comes up in June, while the school’s Black & Gold Golf Classic, in its 8th year, is offered in September. The events can be distinguished by their price points and venues, with the Association encouraging wider support among all caliber of golfers at a public course, whereas the B&G event is more exclusive due to its private course venue and limited field, which tends to draw the most avid of golfers.

Whatever your level of affinity for Hudson Catholic, you are sure to find enough to draw you back to alma mater by some combination of activities conducted by the Office of Advancement and the Alumni Association.

Jack Weisberg
to receive
Signum Fidei Award
Long time generous benefactor Mr. Jack Weisberg has been chosen by President-Principal Terry Matthews to receive the prestigious Signum Fidei Award, signifying fidelity to Hudson Catholic. As such, this is the highest individual honor that can be bestowed at Hudson Catholic.

Mr. Weisberg has done so many things behind the scenes or anonymously, over many years, to ensure that our students can alternately have the supplies, equipment and tuition so vitally needed for them to make their way through their Hawk years.

In one more way to manifest his caring, we are proud to announce the creation of the Jack Weisberg Scholar Awards, two $2,500 awards to be given to a top performing rising Junior and Senior in the Dual Enrollment Program sponsored by St. Peter’s University.

Gratitude fills our hearts for Jack’s generosity, and we wish him hearty congratulations upon receipt of Hudson Catholic’s Signum Fidei Award!

Christian Brothers & Alumni Association
Are Hall of Fame Sponsors

The two most prolific organizations in school history will put their support behind our upcoming Hall of Fame Induction Event on June 18th at Hudson House in Port Liberte, Jersey City.

It seems only fitting that should be so, with the Founding Christian Brothers Community of 1964-1968, and two among the ranks of alumni elected in the 5th class of the Hall of Fame.

We have Brother Tim Froehlich to thank for the sponsorship by, officially, The Brothers of the Christian Schools - District of Eastern North America. Current Brother Visitor, Dennis Lee, FSC, will attend the event, as will Brother Tim, who began his teaching career at Hudson Catholic, serving in 1984-86. He is currently the Director of Finance for DENA, at their Eatontown, NJ HQ.

We are also thankful to the Alumni Association Hudson Catholic High School for their continued generosity toward alma mater -- outgoing President Bill McGrath ’79 and V.P. Rob Astudillo ’06, Secretary Dennis Danilowicz ’71, and Treasurer Larry Basinski ’70.

We are grateful to our very own for enabling us to put on this hallmark event for celebrating the best of what Hudson Catholic is about.
Look Who Stopped By!!!

Walk into the main lobby at the Hawks Nest, peek through the doors to the gym (who hasn’t pressed their nose against that glass to see which of our present and future stars are honing their craft?), and you may just see some D-1 NCAA basketball stars back for a visit with their coach and getting a good private workout with their old teammates! Pictured are Luther Muhammad ‘18 of Arizona State University (playing for Coach Bobby Hurley, a long way from Jersey City), Jahvon Quinerly, ‘18, of Alabama University, late of the Sweet Sixteen, and Shackylle Dezonie, ‘18 of Wesleyan College! To all graduates, come back often to see the school that played a big part in making us who we are!

For Our Upcoming Annual Report of Giving

The Office of Advancement is preparing Hudson Catholic's Annual Report of Giving, to be published in late summer, after completion of our fiscal year on June 30th.

We anticipate a copious (tip of the cap to Mr. Joe Bonner!) report containing 32 pages, with color branding, to be mailed to all constituents on record. It will contain a report on the financial condition of the school, and presentation of all individual and business contributors stratified by giving levels.

This significant logistical undertaking will consume ample financial resources. Consequently, we would like to call upon some of our alumni constituents to help us fund this production, specifically alumni business owners, proprietors, and professional practices.

Please consider taking an ad in the Annual Report. We are intent on presenting a publication that proclaims “this publication has been made possible by advertisements paid entirely by alumni-owned businesses and professional practices."

We invite you to be part of this Alumni-exclusive undertaking. Please join in and show your pride in the Black & Gold! Contact Jill Cypher at jcypher@hudsoncatholic.org to share your ad and arrange payment.
Ms. Vyzas,
How Can We Thank You?
Medical Arts Program Seeks New Instructor

The future Dr. Christina Vyzas answered our prayers last summer and stepped in to help launch our new Medical Arts Program as its very first classroom instructor. Christina came to us, referred by her Dad, Vince Vyzas ’81, because she had the time before entering Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in August.

We could not have chosen a finer person for the role. Christina nurtured our 18 sophomores in the first year of this three-year program that builds from Soph to Senior year. As a result, this year’s Sophs will all be following on to the second year of our three-year track in Medical Arts.

THANK YOU, Christina! Good luck on your own journey into the medical field!

Which leads us to the task of having to replace Christina. Please share this with people you know in the field who may be interested in taking on our talented juniors and next year’s sophomores in this program.

We are looking for a Nurse or Teacher to join our Medical Arts Program, which prepares students for careers in Healthcare. This position is part-time but may lead to full-time. The requirements for the successful candidate will be:

·     School Nurse, RN, LPN, Health Educator or other Medical Professional with knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology and hospital simulation lab.
·     Must be comfortable and knowledgeable working with educational technology, or willing to learn,
·     Must be interested and willing to “grow the program”, ex., community connections and involvement
·     Some teaching experience preferred, but not required.

Please send cover letter and resume to:
